Sønder Felding: River Landscape and Culture
Accommodation in Sønder Felding
Sønder Felding can be explored through three distinct themes: the river and valley, art around Svanholm Sø, and Sønder Felding Church.
Skjern Å and the valley meadows
The Skjern Å flows through Sønder Felding, dividing the town into a northern and a southern part. The town area also includes meadows in the Skjern Å valley. The river is therefore both a landscape feature and a defining element of the town, while the meadows add open areas in the valley to the picture. If your trip focuses primarily on water and landscape, these two features offer a concrete starting point. They provide a different focus from the individual artworks and historic buildings.
Svanholm Sø: lake, troll and former brown coal pits
Svanholm Sø has a water surface area of 80,000 square metres and is up to three metres deep at its deepest point. These figures describe two different measurements: the lake's area and its maximum depth. The lake lies in a landscape with former brown coal pits. Here, a natural feature and a reference to former brown coal mining come together around the water.
A large wooden troll called “Stigfinder Stig” also stands at Svanholm Sø. Artist Thomas Dambo built it together with local volunteers. It is number 152 in Dambo's troll series and is made entirely from recycled materials. The series number places it within the collection; the material detail describes another specific feature of the figure. For travellers interested in land art and large-scale figures, the troll brings together a named artist and local community work.
Land art in Præsteskoven
Another artwork is “De 4 Hjertekamre” in Præsteskoven. The land art installation offers a beautiful view of the Skjern Å and Åparken. Two different artistic themes can therefore be found in the town: the troll at Svanholm Sø is defined by its artist, local volunteers and recycled materials, while the description of “De 4 Hjertekamre” includes its woodland setting and views of the river and Åparken. If you would like to experience art and landscape together, you can distinguish between these two works by their respective features.
Sønder Felding Church: Romanesque construction and later details
Sønder Felding Church has a Romanesque chancel and nave, built from granite blocks. The slender, whitewashed church tower dates from 1909. The pulpit also offers a distinct historical reference point: the church received it in 1558, with Gothic tracery decoration; it was donated by Hartvig Skram and Kirsten Skovgaard. Together, these features show different aspects of the church's architecture: its Romanesque elements, the design of the pulpit and the later date of the tower's construction. If you are interested in architecture, you can consider these details individually rather than reducing the church to just one period.
Å-festivalen
The annual Christian music festival Å-festivalen takes place at Sdr. Felding Stadium. If the festival is relevant to your trip, check the event dates before planning. This lets you schedule your stay around the actual date without assuming one in advance. With its festival, church architecture, art and landscape, Sønder Felding offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip.
