Beder Malling: Beach, Hiking Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Beder Malling
Beder Malling offers plenty of ways to plan a stay focused on the beach, nature or local history. At Mariendal Beach, you can swim, skim stones and fish; hiking trails vary in length and scenery, and both Beder and Malling have traces of the past. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider which of these activities you want to shape your stay.
Mariendal Beach and outdoor activities
At Mariendal Beach in Beder, you can swim, skim stones and fish. Facilities include parking, a dry toilet, fire pits, waste bins and picnic tables. A water point near Mariendalgården is about 500 m away; the address is Ørnevænget 37–41, 8330 Beder.
Mariendal Beach is a good starting point for hikes north towards Fløjstrup and Moesgaard. You can also include the beach in a cycling trip: National Cycle Route N5 passes by Mariendal Beach. The beach activities and various routes offer different ways to spend time outdoors.
Hiking trails by length and scenery
Four hiking trails in Beder-Malling start in Egelund and are 3.8 km, 5.8 km, 7 km and 11.3 km long. The red Vilhelmsborg Route is 11.3 km long and runs along the Giber Å through Vilhelmsborg Forest. It passes Rokballe Mølle, a mill dating from the 17th century. The mill was one of several along the Giber Å.
The white Beder-Malling Trail is 7 km long. It runs from Egelund Sports Centre via Kirkebakken and back along Hovedbækken. This stream drains the marsh between Malling and Beder. The two named routes therefore differ not only in length, but also in the routes and landscapes described. Vilhelmsborg serves as a National Equestrian Centre.
Springtime nature
On the route described, you reach Bymosen after Byagerparken. In spring, you can hear many birds there and the croaking of many frogs. If you want to make this nature experience a focus of your trip, you can take spring into account when planning your visit.
Churches and local history
Beder still has many buildings that illustrate the town’s development from a cluster of farms into a railway town. Beder Church is visible from the Beder-Malling Trail; it was built by the parish residents in 1150.
In Malling, the cemetery of Malling Church was fortified in the early Middle Ages and was also called Folkeborg. The church’s baptismal font dates from around the 12th century and is its oldest item of inventory. Kirkestien also has a historical connection: the path is considered part of the original trade and transport route linking to the loading harbour at Norsminde.
