Povlsker: Church Art, Archaeology and Granite Landscape
Accommodation in Rispebjerg Houses
If you are looking for a hotel on Bornholm, you can understand Povlsker through several clearly distinct themes: church architecture, archaeological sites, granite landscape and a marked hiking route. This makes it possible to connect the interests that matter to you when choosing a destination with specific local features. Povls Kirke shapes the church-related perspective; Rispebjerg and the protected area in Højlyngen represent different archaeological focal points. The plantation and the route of Højlyngsstien add landscape and hiking to the picture.
Church Architecture and Sacred Traces
Povls Kirke is a church without a tower. Inside are wall paintings; the unusual front of the altar was also uncovered during the most recent restoration. This highlights different aspects of the churchâs architecture: its towerless form, the paintings and a distinctive detail of the altar. If you are interested in sacred architecture, you can consider the buildingâs form and furnishings as separate themes.
Another sacred trace is the runic inscription DR 368, recorded at Sankt Pouls Kirke in Poulsker. It adds a named runic record to the picture of the churches in Povlsker. Along with the wall paintings and the altar front, this inscription shows that sacred themes are not limited to the exterior form of a church building.
Archaeological Traces at Rispebjerg and Højlyngen
Rispebjerg is an archaeological area with traces of a Stone Age sun temple and an Iron Age ring fort. Assigning them to different periods helps distinguish between the two: the sun temple points to the Stone Age, while the ring fort dates to the Iron Age. At the same time, the Rispebjerg ring fort is Bornholmâs largest Iron Age defensive structure.
The protection of the site is also part of understanding Rispebjerg. Naturstyrelsen has acquired ten hectares of the central area to safeguard the unique archaeological structures that remain hidden in the ground. The purpose of preservation and the structuresâ underground location offer a different perspective from the dating of the sun temple and ring fort.
A protected area in Højlyngen includes numerous cairns, two standing stones, Kragestenen, Kredsstenen and a stone circle. Compared with the traces of the sun temple and ring fort at Rispebjerg, the focus here is on different stone formations. The named stones and the stone circle give the area its own archaeological points of reference.
Plantation, Watercourse and Hiking Route
Povlsker Plantage is a high-lying granite area with small, bog-filled hollows. The upper reaches of Ăle Ă flow through the plantation. Granite, hollows and the watercourse describe different features of this landscape: the underlying rock, the landforms and the riverâs course. This offers a landscape perspective alongside the areaâs sacred and archaeological themes.
For hiking, Højlyngsstien provides a specific point of reference. The marked trail is 67 kilometres long, crosses Bornholm and runs mostly along gravel roads and footpaths. Through Poulsker Plantage, it follows the ĂleĂĽ-Weg. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the full trail and its local route: the 67 kilometres refer to Højlyngsstien as a whole, while the ĂleĂĽ-Weg marks its route through the plantation. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change seasonally.
