Tera Kora is one of the villages and community centers in western Curaçao, a region known as Banda Abou. Two specific landmarks give the place its own profile: nearby Landhuis Siberië and the viewpoint in the Tera Kòrá neighborhood. They draw attention to different topics—the history of a plantation estate and a route to the sandy plains of San Pedro.

Landhuis Siberië and its history

Landhuis Siberië is located in the vicinity of Tera Kora, in the kunuku along the road to Westpunt and opposite Tera Cora. The colonial country house and its outbuildings are considered significant in terms of architectural and cultural history. Together, they are a complete example of a plantation estate in Curaçao. Venezuelan Saverio Cafiero bought the Siberië plantation, including its country house and outbuildings, in 1784.

Its history also includes a connection to liqueur production: Landhuis Siberië supplied orange peels to Landhuis Chobolobo. Landhuis Chobolobo is a 19th-century country house where Blue Curaçao liqueur, among other things, is made. These details shed light on different aspects of the history: the purchase of the plantation and its buildings in 1784, and the connection between orange peels and liqueur production.

Viewpoint and route in the Tera Kòrá neighborhood

The Tera Kòrá neighborhood has a viewpoint described as newly built in 2021. From there, a route leads east. At the end of the walkway, steps lead down to the sandy plains of San Pedro near the wind turbines. The route description dates from 2021; check the current condition of the route before setting out.

The route description specifies both the direction and the path at the destination: follow the walkway, then take the steps down to the sandy plains. This makes the viewpoint a distinct facet of Tera Kòrá, alongside the historic country house nearby. The place names are useful for both topics: Tera Kòrá for the neighborhood with the viewpoint, and San Pedro for the sandy plains at the end of the described route.

Curaçao in its regional context

At the level of Curaçao as a destination, there are additional nature and culture topics. They complement the local context of Tera Kora without attributing the features of other places to the village. In Christoffelpark, the northern route (blue) and the mountain route (green) are paved and can be driven on in any car. Bromeliads, orchids, lichens and Spanish moss grow along a hiking trail in the park. In Shete Boka National Park, visitors can walk above the cave along the limestone cliffs.

Curaçao’s history can also be explored in various places. The Savonet Museum tells the story of the Savonet plantation and the adjoining Savonet area in a 19th-century plantation house. Hòfi Mango Park was once a plantation and contains more than 700 mango trees. These examples connect past land use with different themes today—a museum display and a park landscape.

The Curaçao Museum presents geological history, pre-Columbian artifacts, maps and illustrations of the Americas and the Caribbean. Its topics also include the occupations, beliefs and way of life of Afro-Curaçaoans after the abolition of slavery, as well as a traditional plantation kitchen. Punda, the oldest part of Willemstad, was established in the 17th century on the eastern side of Sint Anna Bay, next to Fort Amsterdam. It was the only district in the city with a defensive system of walls and ramparts.
