The village is home to an old parish church, another church and archaeological sites that offer different perspectives on cultural history. An access road to Kamenjak also passes through Banjevci.

Churches and Archaeological Traces in Banjevci

The old parish church, Crkva sv. Ivana Krstitelja, is a protected Romanesque building dating from the 11th to 12th century. It stands on a hill above the newer parish church. The building includes a massive, tower-like bell tower. Its location and architecture give the church a distinct place in the history of the village: here, you can encounter a medieval place of worship with a striking tower.

The church of Crkva sv. Nikole Tavelića is associated with Banjevci. It was built in 1970/71 to plans by architect Ante Barać, on the foundations of a large stone church whose construction had begun in 1938. Two different periods are therefore represented side by side: the Romanesque building from the 11th to 12th century and the later church, built on the site of an earlier stone construction project.

Archaeological sites are also part of Banjevci’s cultural heritage. At Gradina pod Osridkom, the remains of a fortification are listed as protected archaeological cultural heritage under registration number Z-6731. Villa rustica is also listed as protected archaeological cultural heritage. These names complement the churches with two distinct archaeological points of interest.

The Route to Kamenjak and the Bicycle Repair Station

In the area around Banjevci, the access road to Kamenjak from Pirovac passes through Banjevci, via the junction on the Adriatic Highway in the direction of Stankovci. At the church, turn slightly left and continue to the Donji Bakovići bus stop. From there, turn left and follow the road for 2.1 kilometres to the foot of Kamenjak; it is another 1.8 kilometres from there to the summit. Check the park administration’s access directions again before setting off.

A bicycle repair station was set up in Banjevci in 2022 for cyclists travelling through the municipality. If the station is important to your plans, check in advance whether it is currently available for use. This gives you two different points of reference when planning your trip: the access road to Kamenjak and the station set up for cyclists travelling through the area.

Other historic sites in Općina Stankovci represent different periods. In Velim, the remains of the castle on a hill form a rectangular fortification with the remains of two towers of different ages; the castle was destroyed and burned down in 1684. The prehistoric hillfort Ogradak in Stankovci was generally used for observation or defence. In Budak, a signal tower was built during the Venetian-Ottoman wars as part of an entire chain of fortifications. Near the Širitovac and Velištak wells in Velim, there is also a settlement from the early phase of the Neolithic.
