Municipality of Škabrnja – Churches, memorial sites and Ravni Kotari
Accommodation in Municipality of Škabrnja
In the Municipality of Škabrnja, Romanesque and Gothic sacred buildings meet a landscape of plains and distinctive elevations. The municipality lies in Ravni Kotari, a predominantly flat region with elevations of up to 200 metres. At 164.6 metres above sea level, Ražovljeva glavica is the municipality’s highest point. From the summit, you can look out over the plain, olive groves and wind turbines on the horizon.
Churches and culture in Škabrnja
The Church of St. Luke dates back to the 13th century. Its pointed Gothic vault was built in the 15th century; the church has been fully restored. The Church of St. Mary has a different design: built in the 11th century as a central structure with six apses, it has been restored and conserved. Together, the two churches offer a comparison of different architectural forms and periods of construction.
The parish’s history also stretches far back: the Parish of the Assumption of Mary has existed since 1686. The new Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary was consecrated on 8 August 2004. The history of the KUD Škabrnja cultural association, founded in 2000 to preserve local customs and regional folklore through music and dance, offers insight into these traditions.
Village centre and memorial sites
Trg dr. Franje Tuđmana is the centre of Škabrnja and serves as a venue for major municipal and church events. The square is home to a 340-centimetre-tall bronze monument to Dr Franjo Tuđman. It was erected on 22 September 2001.
Several memorial sites commemorate Croatian soldiers and civilians who were killed or fell in Škabrnja. The mass grave of Škabrnja was discovered on 6 June 1996; 27 people were exhumed, including one defender and 26 civilians. The “Ranjena golubica” monument was erected in November 1999 and is dedicated to 27 Croatian defenders and civilians. The Central Cross and the memorial centre are also among the sites of remembrance in the municipality.
The Škabrnja Memorial Centre extends over two floors: the ground floor houses a multimedia hall, and above it is a memorial room bearing the names of the victims. The annual commemorations have different focuses. Municipal Day is traditionally observed on 18 October, with wreaths laid at the cemetery of St. Luke. Every year on 18 November, wreaths are laid and candles lit at the mass grave monument. The specific programmes may vary.
Landscape, agriculture and local products
Olive growing and olive oil production have long been traditions in the municipality. Among the fruit crops, Marasca sour cherries are the most widely grown. A smaller plantation at Kod bunara covers 0.4 hectares and has around 150 trees. Traditional uses of Marasca cherries include liqueurs, spirits, vitamin syrups, juices and jams, as well as frozen or dried fruit. These agricultural activities add another aspect of local life to the picture of the churches and memorial sites.
Sport and cycling
The municipal Vlačine Sports Centre covers around 55,000 square metres. Its facilities include a football pitch, a small-sided football pitch, a padel court, a multi-purpose court, a basketball court and an outdoor fitness area. All the courts are lit, so they can also be used after sunset. As individual facilities may change, check the latest information before making plans.
In the surrounding area, the Benkovac–Nadin–Smilčić–Benkovac cycling loop passes closest to Škabrnja; it is the nearest of seven published routes. The loop is 44.8 kilometres long and has 449 metres of elevation gain. Conditions and signage may change, so check the latest information before setting out.
