Ljubač combines sandy beaches and very shallow water with historical traces at churches and fortifications. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can weigh two different interests: time by the sea or the history of the town. Both are evident in specific features of the local landscape and townscape.

Sandy Beaches and Shallow Water

The beaches in Ljubač are sandy, and the water is very shallow. Even more than 100 metres from the shore, the sea is said to remain no deeper than knee height. The shallow coastal areas are suitable for swimming in shallow water and for children to play by the sea. Water conditions can vary by season; bear this in mind if the sea is the focus of your stay.

In addition to the main beaches, there are several food and drink establishments. Individual businesses and their seasonal availability may change. If a visit there is part of your day’s plans, check before travelling which options are available during your chosen period.

Fortifications and Churches

The Ljubljana (Stari grad) fortification above Ljubač preserves remains of a medieval defensive complex. The Gothic Church of St. Marcela survives within the walls of the former Kastrum Ljuba. This directly connects a named church building with the historic fortification. Check access and preservation conditions locally before visiting.

Other churches include the Church of St. Martin, the restored Church of St. Ivan, and the remains of the 14th-century Church of St. Magdalena. Their structural condition varies: St. Ivan has been restored, while only remains of St. Magdalena survive. Together with St. Marcela, these churches offer different points of connection if you want to explore the town’s history through its religious buildings.

Townscape and Regional Context

Ljubač’s historic centre has narrow lanes and closely spaced houses. In the Middle Ages, Ljubač was surrounded by a defensive wall; remains of this fortification survive in Šekuće. The fortification above the town and the wall remains in Šekuće are two distinct traces of medieval defences.

Within the wider travel destination of Općina Ražanac, the municipality lies on the Velebit Channel. In the Middle Ages, Kastrum Ljuba was an important fortress in the wider Zadar area. This broader historical context complements the local traces found at churches, in lanes, and at fortifications.

Walk Towards Vrtoloma

A walk towards Vrtoloma and the higher-lying Ljubljana (Stari grad) fortification offers a scenic way to approach the historic remains. Trail conditions and informal access may vary; check both locally before setting out.

The planning considerations differ: beach conditions and dining options should be checked seasonally; for historic sites, the main considerations are access and state of preservation.
