The sandy peninsula of Privlaka stretches for several kilometres between the Bay of Nin and the Zadar Channel. On three sides, the coastal landscape is shaped by crystal-clear sand and shallow, warm sea. Alongside its seaside setting, a long promenade, traditional fishing practices and historic sites contribute to the destination’s range of attractions.

Coast and paths with evening views

A paved promenade begins right at LuÄŤica, runs west and extends across almost the entire peninsula. It offers views of the sunset. Its length and westward direction make the promenade a clear landmark for finding your way around the area.

A specific photo spot is in Sabunike: you can reach the viewpoint on walks along the long promenades. The evening hours are particularly suitable. This gives you a choice between sunset views along the promenade and a named destination for evening photos.

Wind and water sports

Sabunike is also a destination for surfers and windsurfers. Thanks to the favourable, steady winds from Velebit, it is considered one of Croatia’s best-known surfing destinations, alongside Bol on Brač. September and October are particularly suitable for surfing and windsurfing. If this is a priority for your trip, these two months offer a specific seasonal guide.

Traditional practices and historic sites

Written documents first mention Privlaka in 1296 as a wine-growing settlement. Two other local traditions are connected with activities at sea, but describe different things: Ludru is a traditional fishing method that has been passed down from generation to generation in Privlaka for many decades. The Sabunjari tradition is associated with the laborious extraction of sand from the sea.

The Crkva Sv. Vida dates from the 14th century and is completely preserved. To this day, a church service is held there in June on the feast day of the patron saint. The Sokolar well is the best known of Privlaka’s twelve preserved wells. It is associated with a legend about unhappy love; this legend is mentioned in the first Croatian novel.

Events throughout the year

The traditional “Privlačka lignjijada” takes place in November. It has a sporting and humanitarian character and aims to preserve the traditional Kosavica squid-fishing method. The event therefore ties a set month to a local fishing tradition.

In the wider destination of Općina Privlaka, the traditional event “Noć privlačkih ribara i sabunjara” takes place every summer in mid-July. At the event, restaurateurs showcase specialities. Also within this wider destination, “Privlačka noć” is held every summer on 4 August, combining culture, entertainment and food and drink. Event programmes may change, so check the current programme before attending a particular celebration.

When looking for a hotel in Privlaka, you can choose your travel dates to suit your interests: September and October are particularly highlighted for surfing and windsurfing, while the events mentioned provide further seasonal points of reference.
