As a destination, Obrovac brings together river scenery and local history. The Zrmanja flows through a karst landscape and several canyons, forming travertine and waterfalls along the way. Obrovac lies beside a widening of the limestone canyon; on the way to Zadar, the Zrmanja is crossed here. If you are looking for a hotel in Obrovac, you can first consider whether water activities, walks, or historical sights should be the focus of your trip.

The Zrmanja and outdoor activities

Activities on the water include swimming in the Zrmanja and rafting along various routes. The rafting routes are suitable for beginners and experienced rafters. Water conditions and tour operators may change; check current conditions and offers before planning a trip.

On land, you can stroll through Obrovac’s narrow streets, have coffee on the waterfront promenade, or take in the town from a viewpoint. Old Italian gravel roads offer another option for walks. Visiting cultural sites or the local history museum is also one way to spend your time. This lets you choose between water activities, walks, and cultural stops, without a set route being prescribed.

For planning a trip by electric bicycle, a charging station in Obrovac is a useful landmark: it is one of three charging stations; the other two are in Gračac and Golubić. Check the station’s availability before setting off.

Fortress, churches, and local history

The present-day settlement developed as a suburb of a medieval fortress on a hill. Here, the term refers to the town’s development in connection with the fortress. From the 14th century, Obrovac was owned by the princes of Krbava, the Kurjaković family; the fortress remains are in fairly good condition today. The area’s historical economic development is also linked to the Zrmanja: Obrovac remained a small trading port because the river was navigable as far as the town.

St. Joseph’s Parish Church was originally built as a medieval structure in the 15th century and was completely renovated in the Baroque style in 1794. The Church of the Holy Trinity has a different history: after the previous building was demolished, it was rebuilt in 1834, took on its final appearance at the end of the 19th century, and was consecrated in 1906. It also preserves older icons from the original iconostasis, created by the Greek painter Evtimije Dimitrijades in 1835/1836. Together, the churches illustrate different historical layers: St. Joseph’s medieval origins and Baroque renovation, and the 19th-century construction and furnishing history of the Church of the Holy Trinity.

The remains of the Benedictine Monastery of St. George Koprivski are still visible in the Obrovac cemetery. The Obrovac Local History Museum displays ethnographic and natural history collections in its permanent exhibition. If you are planning a museum visit, check the visitor information in advance, as it may change.
