Lišane Ostrovičke combines its location on the edge of Ravni kotari with ecclesiastical and archaeological traces, as well as a heritage of music and dance. The town lies at the intersection of the geographical regions of Bukovica, Ravni kotari and Zagora. Churches, finds and traditions offer different points of interest as you consider what appeals to you at your destination.

A location between three geographical regions

Lišane Ostrovičke lies on the eastern edge of Ravni kotari and at the intersection of three geographical regions: Bukovica, Ravni kotari and Zagora. The town is also on the Benkovac–Skradin state road and the Zadar–Knin railway line. These routes help with regional orientation. If you are considering travelling by train, check the current rail service in advance.

Church and archaeological traces

A prominent architectural landmark is the parish church of Sv. Nikola Tavelić. It was built from 1975 to 1977 as a votive shrine, to plans by the architect Vinko Galić, and consecrated in 1978. The church also contains a copy of a painting that was exhibited in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The copy was returned to its original pre-war place in the church.

Archaeological finds in Lišane range from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Among the more precisely dated traces are graves with stone cover slabs of the so-called Old Croatian type, dated to the 8th and 9th centuries. The foundations of an Old Croatian church have also been found. The graves and church foundations thus stand alongside the much newer parish church of Sv. Nikola Tavelić as distinct historical points of reference.

Rock inscription above Nimci

Another distinctive feature is the rock inscription “Hajduk–Split–Lišane” with a coat of arms. It is located in Lišane Ostrovičke below the railway line and above Nimci. The inscription is about 100 metres long; the coat of arms has a diameter of about 9 metres. Its location and the two approximate measurements give this place a different character from the ecclesiastical and archaeological traces: here, the focus is a large-scale inscription.

Music and dance traditions

Church folk music, locally known as “Lišanska misa”, is kept alive in Lišane Ostrovičke. It is closely related to the secular singing of the Lišane region. The cultural association KUD Sv. Nikola Tavelić helps preserve this tradition and is recognised as a bearer of knowledge about Ojkanje. Ojkanje, also locally called Orzenje, is still performed in Lišane Ostrovičke. This singing style was added to the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2010. Check in advance whether a performance will take place during your stay.

The cultural heritage of the wider destination of Općina Lišane Ostrovičke also includes the circle dance Kukulešće. Men and women hold hands and dance in a circle, with their feet firmly planted and with jumps, to the rhythm set by the Cvitara player. Cvitares are harmonica-like instruments that were played in Lišane for circle dancing. Diple are traditional wind instruments: they are played with six fingers and made from specially treated goat or sheep skin. Svirale, or Dvojnice, are wooden shepherd’s instruments with two pipes. The right-hand pipe is used to finger the melody, while the left provides accompaniment. Together, these details show how dance, rhythm and various instruments are intertwined in the cultural heritage of the wider destination of Općina Lišane Ostrovičke.
