Benkovac: Fortress, Museum and Culture
Accommodation in Benkovac
For a trip to Benkovac, cultural history, events and wine offer several specific points of interest. The focus is on Kaštel Benković and the Zavičajni muzej Benkovac, along with traditional festivals and archaeological sites in the surrounding area. When planning, you can choose between the museum and cultural heritage, an event date or one of the routes described.
Fortress and Museum
Kaštel Benković is a cultural and historical fortress in Benkovac and a protected cultural monument of national importance dating from the 15th century. According to tradition, it was built in the second half of that century. Today, the fortress serves as an event venue and a centre of cultural life. It thus combines a historic site with a contemporary cultural role.
The Zavičajni muzej Benkovac is located inside Kaštel Benković. Its permanent exhibition opened in 2022. The museum comprises archaeological, ethnological and cultural-historical collections, as well as a collection on the Homeland War and a collection of stone monuments. Its scope therefore ranges from archaeological and ethnological topics to stone monuments and the history of the Homeland War.
The museum offers groups expert-led visits to Kaštel Benković. It also holds workshops and courses on preserving traditional crafts. The tradition of stonemasonry and stoneworking in the Benkovac area dates back thousands of years. If you are interested in regional craft history, this topic adds another cultural focus to the fortress and the museum collections.
Archaeology and Routes Around Benkovac
About six kilometres east of Benkovac, on a hill, lies Asseria, a Liburnian-Roman settlement in the wider area around the city. Its archaeological remains include monumental city walls, seven city gates and funerary monuments, as well as Late Antique burials and buildings. Asseria therefore encompasses various types of architectural and funerary remains. If you plan to visit, check access and visiting arrangements in advance.
A forest path leads from Benkovac to the nearby 15th-century early Croatian fortress of Kličevica. Check the path conditions and access before setting out. Another route option is the 39-kilometre Wine&Bike Tour: it starts in Polača at Ražnjevića Dvori, passes through Nadin and the Kličevica fortress, and continues to the Benković Citadel in Benkovac, combining wine tastings with sightseeing stops. Six wineries are also featured along the route.
Events and Wine
Benkovac Fest is a traditional annual festival for young singers. Children and young people can showcase their musical talents and singing abilities there. The programme therefore focuses on a different theme than the historic fortress or the museum collections: young people’s musical performances.
The cultural programme also includes a gathering of Dalmatian klapa groups, organised by Klapa Asseria at Kaštel Benković, and the Etnofestival by the KUD Branimir cultural association in Benkovac. Check the specific event dates before your trip. Benkovački sajam takes place on the 10th of every month at two locations: in Benkovačko Selo and at Šetalište kneza Branimira in the centre of Benkovac. Check in advance whether this date fits your travel plans, too.
Vinfest Benkovac is a wine festival. At the 2026 edition, white, rosé and red wines were evaluated, with separate categories for Maraština and Plavina. The 2026 edition was the 17th wine forum of Zadar County. The festival offers its own way to explore wine culture, while the Wine&Bike Tour combines wine tastings with a longer route and sightseeing stops.
Landscape and Orientation
Benkovac lies at the transition between the fertile Ravni Kotari and the karst landscape of Bukovica. The city’s location is also shaped by a road junction where the routes from Zadar to Knin and from Lika to the sea meet. These landscape and transport connections provide a broader geographical context for planning a trip to the specific cultural sites.
