Španat: Archaeology, Culture and Cycling
Accommodation in Španat
Španat combines archaeological traces with a cycling route that passes through the village. You can also explore its cultural history and folklore. When planning a hotel stay, you can focus on specific highlights: the finds at Španat-Pašnik, the earthwork fortification of Gradište Jugovac, the “Slatinski krug” route, or a folklore event documented in historical records.
Archaeological sites near Španat
Španat-Pašnik is designated as a prehistoric archaeological site. The finds include stone axes, a hammer and the upper part of a millstone. Fragments of Brezovljan-type pottery from the Sopot culture were also found there. The site therefore features different types of finds: stone tools and pottery with a specific cultural attribution. This site can be distinguished from the possible historical interpretation of Gradište Jugovac.
The protected archaeological heritage site of Gradište Jugovac is located in Španat. The earthwork has a central raised plateau, a rampart and a ditch. The ditch was connected to the Jugovac stream by a channel. The earthwork’s shape and layout define the character of the site.
Gradište is in the Jugovac field, about 500 metres west of the Bistrica–Španat road and about 500 metres south of Španat’s main road. It is overgrown with brush and low vegetation. From the main road at the crossroads, the route first heads south; at the junction, it then continues east along a farm track. Before visiting, check whether the route and access are currently usable.
The historical interpretation remains tentative: Gradište Jugovac may be identified as one of the fortifications built against the Ottomans, which were systematically constructed in the interfluve between the Sava and Drava rivers during the second half of the 15th century and the first quarter of the 16th century. The site was probably destroyed or abandoned during the wars with the Ottomans. Fighting reached the wider area around Gornji Miholjac and Slatina in the 1530s.
Cycling Route and Folklore
The “Slatinski krug” cycling route runs from the centre of Slatina through Bakić and Gornji Miholjac, passing through Španat on its way towards Višnjica. If you would like to include cycling in your travel plans, check the route details before setting off.
A glimpse of local cultural life is also linked to a specific event: on 27 September 2025, the 7th folklore showcase of the Serbian Cultural Society “Prosvjeta” Zagreb, Slatina Subcommittee, was held at the then newly renovated community centre in Španat. The host group, SKD Prosvjeta Slatina, performs traditional dances from Slavonia. Folklore showcases offer an opportunity to present traditional costumes, songs, dances and customs.
More to Explore in Općina Sopje
Općina Sopje also offers a distinctive regional setting. The part of Mura-Drava Regional Park associated with Sopje is of particular value for its biodiversity and cultural heritage. Cultural traditions in Sopje include “Lilanje na Ivanje,” a centuries-old custom that is observed there in a distinctive way. For Lilanje, many residents of all ages prepare forked poles with small bundles of straw, light the straw and swing the burning poles around themselves at head height. Lilanje in Sopje has been held as an organised event for many years.
The Višnjica agrotourism estate preserves rural heritage by restoring a traditional Slavonian pustara settlement. It offers horse-riding lessons for all ages, either individually or in groups; contact the provider directly to check availability. Another cycling option in Općina Sopje is the “Dravski krug”: the route passes through Sopje, has no significant climbs and leads to a developed picnic area by the Drava River near Sopje.
