Rastovac on Biokovo: Hiking, Tunnel and Local History
Accommodation in Rastovac
Rastovac serves as a gateway to Biokovo from the Zagora side. Above the hamlet rise the summit and ridge of Sveti Ilija; from the summit, there are views in every direction. Both the mountain setting and the road connections therefore shape the area: the Sveti Ilija Tunnel runs through Biokovo, and hiking trails start in the Rastovac area.
Getting There and Finding Your Way
The Sveti Ilija road tunnel passes through Biokovo and connects Rastovac in the Općina Zagvozd municipality with Bast in the Općina Baška Voda municipality; it is on the D532 state road. Another connection is the ŽC 6179 county road between Rastovac and Zagvozd. It is 3.1 kilometres long. Road designations and lengths may change if the road system is revised in the future. For orientation, distinguish between the destinations: the tunnel connects Rastovac with Bast, while the county road connects Rastovac with Zagvozd.
Hiking on Sveti Ilija
The Rastovac–Šute route to Sveti Ilija is five kilometres long and gains 1,350 metres in elevation. Both figures are important when assessing the hike: the distance indicates the length of the trail, while the elevation gain indicates the climb. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
Another trail starts in the hamlet of Stanići, below the Church of the Holy Cross, and heads towards the Sveti Ilija Tunnel and Živa voda. The two trails also differ in their destinations: the Rastovac–Šute route leads to Sveti Ilija, while the trail from Stanići heads towards the tunnel and Živa voda. Check the trail conditions here too before planning your hike.
Churches and Local History
The Church of Saint Stephen in Donji Rastovac is designated as a sacred monument. The Church of the Holy Cross in Donji Rastovac was built in 1612 in the local cemetery. The two churches offer different points of reference for the area's history: the sacred monument designation is a defining feature of one, while the recorded year of construction is a defining feature of the other.
A chapel on Biokovo associated with Sveti Ilija was restored in 2000 by residents of the Zagvozd parish. This adds another sacred site in the mountains to the churches in Donji Rastovac.
The Wider Destination of Općina Zagvozd
The municipality of Općina Zagvozd lies on the northern side of Biokovo and comprises seven settlements. 43 percent of its territory lies within Biokovo Nature Park. The A1 motorway runs through the municipality. According to the municipal description, Općina Zagvozd is easily accessible by road from all parts of Croatia. These details place Rastovac within the wider geographical context of the municipality.
