Slatine: Churches, History and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Slatine
If you’re looking for a hotel in Slatine, it’s worth first exploring the local attractions, which range from church and archaeological history to a designated cycling route. The parish of Slatine is on the eastern side of the island of Čiovo.
Churches, festivals and historical traces
The parish church of the Assumption of Mary stands on a hill in Slatine and was built around 1600. Its interior includes an old painted crucifix. The Church of Our Lady of Prizidnica was built in 1546 and stands on the southern side of Čiovo, below a cliff rising from the sea. Prizidnica was built in 1546, while the parish church in Slatine dates to around 1600 and is therefore younger.
Prizidnica has a marble altar and a painting of the Madonna and Child, attributed to the 16th-century Cretan School. The feast of the Holy Name of Mary is celebrated at the shrine on the first Sunday after the Feast of the Nativity of Mary. The date varies from year to year.
Archaeological traces are also part of the local landscape: Roman inscriptions and finds in Slatine bear witness to Roman influence in the area. There are also remains of Illyrian burial mounds within the parish. Together with the two churches, these traces give the history of the area several distinct historical layers.
Cycling route and boat connection
The Staza Gospe od Prizidnice route starts at Čiovo–Slatine. It runs from Slatine via the Church of Our Lady of Prizidnica to Kava Beach, then back to Slatine. The route is designated for MTB, gravel and trekking bikes. As route conditions can change, check them before setting out.
A boat service connects Split, Slatine and Trogir. In Slatine, a landing stage is listed at Put Duboke Garme. Bicycles can be taken on board with an additional ticket. Check the timetable before travelling when planning your trip.
