Mravince: History and the Izvor života Hiking Route
Accommodation in Mravince
Mravince lies on the slopes of Mount Mosor. Here, a themed hiking route, early Croatian archaeology, and church and local cultural history come together as distinct travel interests. When planning your stay, you can focus on hiking or history. Two versions of the route, with different distances and intended audiences, are listed; the historical facts range from an early Croatian cemetery to the cultural society of the 20th century.
Hiking the Izvor života Route
Themed circular hiking trail Izvor života connects the Jadro excursion area with Mravince and Kučine. Its full route is 9 kilometres long and is suitable for mountain hikers and beginners to mountain hiking. The 7.5-kilometre version is aimed at recreational athletes in good physical condition. The two route lengths differ by 1.5 kilometres; the intended audiences also differ. The trail reaches an elevation of up to 400 metres. Before setting out, check the trail conditions and choose suitable footwear. This way, your choice takes into account both the distance and the stated physical requirements, rather than focusing only on the difference in route length.
Archaeology at Glavičine
An early Croatian row-grave cemetery dating to the 9th and 10th centuries was excavated at Glavičine in Mravince between 1937 and 1939. The term “row-grave cemetery” describes the arrangement of the graves in rows; “early Croatian” places the find in its historical context. The cemetery contains 130 graves and is considered one of the largest Old Croatian cemeteries. Finds include clothing items and simple jewellery, including belt fittings, copper, bronze and silver earrings, and rings. The dates refer to different things: the 9th and 10th centuries are the dating of the cemetery, while 1937 to 1939 is the excavation period. The cemetery may be connected with the medieval village of Kuk or Kučine. The medieval village of Prosik remained inhabited until the 1530s.
Church and cultural history
The parish church in Mravince is dedicated to John the Baptist; at the same time, Saint Mary continues to be venerated there. The original wooden altars were replaced by Neoclassical marble altars in 1912. In the new altars, “Neoclassical” and “marble” refer to two different features: the style and the material. Thus, the dedication and veneration of Mary sit alongside a specifically dated change to the church’s furnishings.
KUD Zvonimir Mravince was founded in 1928 and is based in the cultural centre built in 1932. Historically, the society served as a centre of local cultural, educational and recreational life and organised numerous events. The two years refer to different events: 1928 to the society’s founding and 1932 to the construction of the cultural centre. This places the cultural tradition in context both through the society’s role and through the building that houses KUD.
