Mitlo: Church of St. Michael and rural character
Accommodation in Mitlo
Mitlo is one of the villages in the hinterland of Marina where rural tourism is promoted. The Church of St. Michael provides a specific cultural point of interest. When planning a trip, visitors can combine a local landmark with the area’s agricultural visitor offerings.
The Church of St. Michael in Mitlo
The church is a protected, individually designated immovable cultural asset with the reference number Z-4698. It has a single nave and is built of stone, with a roof made of stone slabs. The façade features a cross-shaped bell opening. Traces of frescoes and decorative elements dating from between the Gothic and Renaissance periods are among its features, along with a Baroque altarpiece from the 18th century.
The church’s various architectural features give it a distinctive historical character: its simple layout and stone roof sit alongside decorative elements and the Baroque altarpiece. If you plan to visit the interior, check access locally in advance.
Rural offerings and olive oil
An olive mill named Mitlo processes olive oil from the olive groves of Marina. Marina has just over one million olive trees, and the region is also known for high-quality olive oils. If you plan a visit or tasting, check availability in advance.
Farms are part of Općina Marina’s tourism offerings, with locally grown and processed foods available. The rural culinary scene includes Mediterranean traditions featuring cheese and prosciutto from family farms, salted fish, grilled meat and fish, seafood, Dalmatian pašticada, and seasonal wild asparagus. Visitors can also go fishing in Marina and then sample dishes made with their own catch. It is advisable to inquire in advance about specific options.
Culture and landscape in Općina Marina
The wider destination of Općina Marina has other historical points of interest. The Church of St. Luke in Poljica dates from the 13th or 14th century and still displays Gothic features. The Church of St. Marina was built in the early 16th century outside the once-fortified Bosiljina, at the far end of Marina Bay. These buildings offer different historical periods from the church in Mitlo.
Historical traces are also visible along the coast of Stari Trogir Bay, including parts of ancient baths, a cistern, a frigidarium, and mosaic fragments. The bay is almost square and has a long sandy beach. Near the Bliznice ponds by Gustirna, there is a rest area with picnic benches; the floating water lilies are particularly striking in spring.
