Dugopolje: Getting There, Cultural Heritage and Trails
Accommodation in Dugopolje
When planning a trip to Dugopolje, the road connections, cultural sites and trails in the surrounding area are useful points of reference. Some of the following churches, caves and routes are located in the wider destination of Općina Dugopolje, not in the town itself.
Getting There and Finding Your Way
Dugopolje is connected by the A1 motorway and the D1 state road between Split and Sinj. The A1 exit for Split is in Dugopolje. These two roads help you locate the town; current traffic conditions may vary. If you would like to combine your trip with a visit to the wider area, note that the attractions and trailheads mentioned there are located in different places within Općina Dugopolje.
Roman Road and Churches
In the surrounding area, the Roman Road themed hiking trail follows the municipal boundary between Dugopolje and Klis. The preserved section is about two kilometres long and runs past the remains of ancient road connections. Archaeological research is still ongoing. The trail therefore highlights both the historic road connection and the research that is still underway.
Several churches are spread across different places in the wider destination of Općina Dugopolje. In Dugopolje, the old parish church of St Michael the Archangel is located in the local cemetery; it was fully restored in 1997. The new parish church dedicated to the same saint was built in 1983. The Church of St Roch stands in Kute, a hamlet on the eastern side of Dugopolje. The single-nave building has a square apse and was probably built in the early 19th century. The parish church of All Saints in Koprivno dates from 1901, and the parish church of St Peter and St Paul in Kotlenice from 1873.
Caves and Trails in the Wider Destination of Općina Dugopolje
VranjaÄŤa Cave is in the village of Kotlenice, at the foot of the central part of the Mosor mountain range. It was designated a protected geomorphological natural monument in 1963. The cave can be reached by car or public transport on bus line 67, which runs between Split, Kotlenice, Donji Dolac and Gornji Dolac. Check the current timetable before setting off.
Another cave, Kraljeva Peć, extends about 110 metres underground. From the hamlets of Balići-Džakići, it can be reached on foot in approximately ten minutes. Much of the cave is accessible to hikers, who descend carefully over the edge of the chamber; however, the routes inside are not yet marked. This information distinguishes the short access time from the route through the cave itself.
Hiking trails also pass through different parts of the destination. The “Mali put” themed trail through the Dugopolje field is part of the “Hidden Dalmatia” project. Another trail starts at the Plitača site in the Dugopolje field and leads to the 1,262-metre-high peak of Ljubljan. The more demanding route to the 1,325-metre-high Vickov stup starts in the hamlet of Punde in the village of Kotlenice. The “Our Lady of Sinj Route” pilgrimage trail runs from Solin via Klis and Dugopolje to the Shrine of Our Lady of Sinj.
Regional Experiences and Cuisine
As part of a mini trail league, a trail race is held each year during the winter months on the northern slopes of Mosor in Dugopolje.
