Discover Zaostrog: Monastic Heritage and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Zaostrog
Zaostrog offers two clearly distinct focuses for planning a trip: local cultural heritage, including a monastery, churches and monuments, and hiking routes with specified walking times. If you are looking for a hotel in Zaostrog, you can plan your stay around your preferred daily itinerary: would you like to explore the religious buildings and their history, or take the stated walking times into account in your plans? The following places and routes make this distinction concrete.
The Franciscan Monastery
The Franciscan Monastery of St. Mary is an important local heritage site. Above the church entrance is an inscription in Bosančica dating from 1589. The complex includes a library with around 20,000 books, an archive, a permanent exhibition of works by Mladen Veža, and a botanical garden with more than 250 plant species. The southern entrance on the seaside leads to the museum, library, botanical garden and Mladen Veža memorial gallery. This brings together a precisely dated inscription, written collections, art and plants in different parts of the monastery, offering several ways to explore its heritage.
Churches, Chapels and a Protected Watercourse
The churches and chapels can also be distinguished by their names, architectural styles and dates of construction. The Gothic Church of St. Barbara has a cemetery and a Baroque bell tower. Two periods are represented here: the church is Gothic, while its bell tower is Baroque. It should not be confused with the present-day parish church of St. Barbara, built in 1872. The Chapel of St. Anthony is in the village and dates from 1893. The Chapel of St. Ilija is near Prosiko; it was built in 1894. The Chapel of Our Lady, dating from 1911, stands in Kučine. The chapels of St. Anthony and St. Ilija were built just one year apart; the chapel in Kučine dates from later.
The village stream, lined with stone, carries a mountain stream down to the sea and is protected as a cultural and historical monument. It adds another protected testament to local history alongside the religious buildings.
Fortress Ruins and Hiking Routes
The remains of Ostrog Fortress lie below Viter, above Zaostrog; a viewpoint is associated with them. The visitor map lists two routes with walking times for planning hikes: Z1 connects Kosovići and Zjatva and is listed as taking 1 hour 45 minutes. Z2 connects Despoti and Šapašnik; the walking time is 2 hours 30 minutes. Z2 is therefore 45 minutes longer than Z1. The routes also connect different places, so both walking time and destination may factor into your choice of route. Route conditions can change; check them before setting out.
The ascent to Zjatva starts in the old village, more precisely at the hamlet of Kosovići. The ascent is listed as taking around 1.5 hours. This gives you another specific time and a named starting point for planning, in addition to the two routes on the map.
