The traditional wooden boats at the open-air museum in the harbour offer a glimpse into Betina’s maritime history. The townscape also includes a protected historic centre with stone houses, religious buildings and recurring festivals. This gives you a range of themes to explore when planning your trip: boatbuilding, local history, cultural traditions, water sports and the beach.

Wooden Boats and Shipbuilding in Betina

The open-air museum in the harbour displays 46 traditional wooden boats, arranged by type and size. An interactive totem provides information about individual boats. The organised display makes it possible to compare different types of boat; the outdoor maritime collection also conveys their historical role. This brings the subject to life both through the variety of vessels on display and through their importance in the town’s history.

The permanent exhibition at the Betina Museum of Wooden Shipbuilding comprises eight collections. One specific example of the local boatbuilding tradition is the gajeta: designed as a sturdy farmers’ boat with a lateen sail, it was adapted to local needs. This particular boat type adds to the broader perspective offered by the collection.

Historic Centre and Buildings

Betina’s historic centre is protected as a cultural monument. Old stone lanes and closely packed stone houses form the architectural ensemble. A prominent landmark at its edge is Hrelić Tower: the defensive structure dates from 1514, stands at the entrance to Varoš and is now incorporated into a private house.

The Baroque Church of St Francis of Assisi also tells the story of Betina’s architectural history. It dates from 1601, and its bell tower was designed by Ivan Skoko in 1752. Alongside these buildings, living culture is also part of the town’s history: the Zora Cultural and Arts Association preserves Betina’s old circle dances, including Balambrin (Kolo na križ) and Kolo od kanate.

Festivals and Coast

Two annual festivals put different traditions in the spotlight. Regata za dušu i tilo is a competition featuring traditional wooden boats. Dan brganje is celebrated throughout the day on the first Sunday in August and honours the tradition of shellfish harvesting. The two events differ both in what they celebrate and in their fixed place in the annual calendar.

Diving, Sailing and a Named Trail

Punta Diving, based in Betina, offers dives in Kornati National Park and at wrecks in the Adriatic. The sailing school is for children aged 8 to 12 and also welcomes holidaymakers who want to learn basic sailing skills. If a particular date is important for your plans, arrange it directly with the relevant provider.

Another specific local reference is Trail 2, which passes through Lovišća, Betina and Murter. This named route adds another option alongside maritime history, culture and activities on the water.
