Discover Skradin: Churches, Klapa and Krka
Accommodation in Skradin
Skradin combines a protected historic centre with churches, cultural collections and activities in the Skradin area. The Klapa tradition and local specialities also shape the town. You can tailor your stay to interests such as architecture, water activities or regional culture.
Churches and Cultural Heritage in Skradin
The entire town centre of Skradin is a protected cultural monument. Notable religious buildings include the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary: the single-nave cathedral is designed in a late Baroque-Classical style and was completed and consecrated on 16 April 1758. Its 1776 organ belongs to the Nakić school. It was built by Italian organ builder Francesco Dacci and is designated as a state cultural asset.
The Orthodox Church of Saint Spyridon was built in 1876 in the Neo-Gothic style. Inside are numerous icons and an 18th-century iconostasis by Rapsomanikis of Corfu. The Church of Saint Jerome represents a different period: it dates from the 16th century, has a relief on its façade and has been protected as a monument since 1974.
The parish and abbey directorate is a museum treasury of religious and ethnographic heritage. Its collections include historic paintings, liturgical objects and a valuable library. The Scardona Park displays classic cars, motorcycles, bicycles, photographs, artefacts and memorabilia. Technical workshops and restorations are also connected with the exhibition and Croatian motor culture there.
Activities and Access to Skradinski buk
Activities in the Skradin area include hiking, cycling, canoeing, kayaking and rowing. The Krka Estuary and Lake Prokljan are considered suitable for rowing because of their calm waters and steady currents. If you prefer to explore the area on foot or by bicycle, cycling and hiking are also among the options listed.
Skradinski buk can be reached on foot, by bicycle, by boat or by Krka National Park bus. Allow about two hours for the visit; access time is not included. So factor in this additional access time when planning how long your visit will take.
Skradin Marina is close to Krka National Park. It has 180 berths with water and electricity connections. For planning purposes, these are two distinct points of reference: the access options and visit duration for Skradinski buk, and the marina’s listed facilities.
Klapa Tradition and Local Specialities
Every year, Skradin hosts a gathering of Dalmatian Klapa singers on the first Saturday in August. Klapa singing therefore offers a specific cultural point of reference for travel planning: the event takes place on a recurring calendar date. If you would like to plan your stay around it, bear in mind that it is held on the first Saturday in August.
Local cuisine also offers a range of options. Skradin’s desserts include preparations made with figs, almonds and mulberries. Jujube brandy, walnut brandy and rose-petal liqueur are also associated with the town. Skradinski risotto is another well-known speciality. These dishes and drinks vary in type and ingredients—from fruit-based desserts to the aforementioned brandies and risotto.
Skradin is connected by direct and indirect transport links to neighbouring countries and many countries in Central and Western Europe; individual connections should be checked separately. If you are considering Skradin as a destination, its different highlights can help you plan: historic heritage and collections, activities in the Skradin area, or a visit during the annual Klapa gathering.
