Danilo: Archaeology in the fertile Danilsko Polje
Accommodation in Danilo
Danilo lies in the fertile Danilsko Polje. For travelers who want to shape their stay around archaeological themes, the area offers points of interest spanning several eras: from traces of Neolithic settlements and the Ridita site at Gradina to Roman, late antique, and early Christian remains. The early Croatian cemetery at Stari Šematorij is another point of interest. Danilo can therefore be explored through different periods and archaeological contexts, rather than through just one historical focus.
Prehistory and the Danilo culture
Traces of a Neolithic settlement have been found at Bitinj: pottery, flint, and bone artifacts. Gradina is a prehistoric settlement of the Iron Age Ridita. Rider, on Gradina hill, was the center of the prehistoric Delmata community of Ridita. The difference between the archaeological contexts can be summed up simply: at Bitinj, the materials listed above are the main focus; at Gradina, it is the settlement and community center.
Well-formed fired vessels such as pots, pans, and plates are considered characteristic of the Danilo culture. These forms give this cultural heritage a tangible material dimension alongside its connections to places and communities.
Roman and early Christian remains
A Roman urban villa complex with baths is located in Šematorij. An early Christian basilica was built on top of the baths. Gradina was used again as a settlement in late antiquity; features from this period include water cisterns, walls, and settlement structures. Danilo thus brings together Roman and early Christian architectural remains, as well as traces of late antique and prehistoric settlements. In Roman times, Danilo was known as Rider; the settlement had more than 10,000 inhabitants. Rider therefore appears both as the prehistoric community center at Gradina and as the name of Danilo in Roman times.
Stari Šematorij adds 370 early Croatian graves dating from the 9th to the 15th century to the archaeological sites. The different types of jewelry are among the cemetery’s notable details. Its dating also sets it apart from the Neolithic and Iron Age archaeological contexts.
Gradina and planning your visit
Visitors can walk from the archaeological site in Danilo to the hill with the remains of the old Gradina fortification. An archaeological guide to Šibenik-Knin County, presented in 2017, features Gradina with photos and texts and includes directions, such as coordinates, route length, and signs along the access road. Since this access information comes from a 2017 publication, check the latest information about access before your visit.
Route and dining after your visit
The proposed archaeological route “Putovanje kroz vrijeme” makes Danilo its first stop after departing from Šibenik. Route descriptions may change, so check the current route listing if you plan to follow it. Organized visitor groups can try traditional dishes at nearby restaurants after visiting Danilo.
