Široke: Cycling Routes, Church and Wine
Accommodation in Široke
For travel planning, Široke can be considered in terms of two specific themes: cycling routes through the hinterland of Primošten and the Church of St. Jerome. The Matošin winery, which is associated with the village, is another attraction.
Cycling routes as a guide to travel planning
The 10 Sela cycling route, also known as Route 103, follows local roads through the hinterland of Primošten and passes through Široke. It is 23.8 kilometres long. This gives you both a specific distance for planning and an indication of the route’s character: the road route and its setting in the hinterland are its defining features. Check the route numbering and road conditions before setting off.
The Stone Lace Track follows a different route: it passes through Široke, then via Jurinovi and Prhovo before returning to Primošten. Along the track are vineyards and olive groves on rocky ground, bordered by kilometres of dry-stone walls. The route requires a certain level of physical fitness due to its length; check current trail conditions, as the surface may change. There are different points to consider when choosing between the two routes: for 10 Sela, the stated distance and local road network are described; for the Stone Lace Track, the route through several named places and the fitness required due to its length are described.
The Church of St. Jerome
The Church of St. Jerome offers a cultural and historical highlight in Široke. The 2014 planning status lists it as a protected cultural and historical site; check current access before planning a visit. The church serves as a cemetery church. Its bell tower was added in 1906 to the older Romanesque church dating from the 13th century, which serves as a sacristy. The building brings together different construction phases: the Romanesque predecessor and the tower added later.
Wine and local experiences
The local wine scene is also specifically represented: the Matošin winery is located in Široke, in the Primošten area. The winery is associated with a wine-tasting experience featuring peka cooked in olive oil. If you would like to include this in your plans, check current availability and booking terms in advance; both may change.
More experiences in the wider destination of Općina Primošten
In the wider destination of Općina Primošten, you can also explore the cultural heritage and local history of Primošten itself. Staro selo, the old town of Primošten, was originally the island of Capocesto, also known as Gola glava; later, it was connected to the mainland by a filled-in causeway. In the old town centre, there are paved streets called Šalizi and preserved old stone houses. The parish church of St. George was built in its present grand form in 1760 and is protected as immovable cultural property of the Republic of Croatia. The single-nave rural church of St. Roch also stands in a landscaped park and is protected as immovable cultural property of the Republic of Croatia.
For scenery and views, the Gaj cycling route, Route No. 105, leads to Mount Gaj and the statue of Our Lady of Loreto; along the way, there are views of Primošten’s vineyards. The statue is 17 metres high, including its pedestal. In suitable weather, the viewpoint on Mount Gaj offers views at sunset of the Primošten peninsula and the Primošten and Šibenik archipelagos.
