Kistanje lies on the limestone plateau of Bukovica in the Dalmatian hinterland. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you want to explore a trail directly from Kistanje or visit destinations in the nearby area. The Staza Trošenj–Pištavac leads to Trošenj Fortress; Krka Monastery and Burnum are also nearby. In the town itself, two Orthodox churches date from markedly different historical periods.

Hiking trail to Trošenj Fortress

The 5.7-kilometre Staza Trošenj–Pištavac can be reached from Kistanje. It passes through Čučevo to the medieval Trošenj Fortress. The trail thus links a specific route with a historical destination: the fortress was built in the 15th century by the Šubić noble family to oversee a strategically important bridge over the Krka.

The trail is a gravel track and is almost entirely flat. The only exception is the gentle climb to the viewpoint at Trošenj Fortress. Its length, surface and this climb give you practical reference points for planning your own hike. If you are interested in the trail, you can take both its route and the terrain profile described into account, rather than judging it solely by its destination.

Krka and nearby destinations

The Krka Nature Interpretation Centre – vrelo života is the main gateway to the western part of Krka National Park. Interactive features and multimedia introduce the Krka River, its history, flora and fauna, and its role in the lives of the local population. The centre connects nature-related topics with a look at the river’s importance to people in the region.

Krka Monastery, founded in 1350, is located near Kistanje. Ancient Roman catacombs beneath the monastery church are open to visitors. Another way to visit the monastery is on organised boat trips from Roški slap. These run from April to October; plan your trip within this stated period and check the dates in advance.

Roman traces and churches in Kistanje

Burnum is also located near Kistanje. Visitors can see the arches of the command building, a military amphitheatre and several walls of the training ground. These visible remains give the site a different historical focus from the medieval Trošenj Fortress: at Burnum, the command building, an amphitheatre and parts of a military training ground take centre stage.

Every summer since 2011, Krka National Park has held the Burnumske Ide Heritage Festival in Burnum. Alongside the architectural remains, this annual cultural event is another topic you can factor into your plans around Kistanje.

In Kistanje itself, the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas dates from around 1536. The Orthodox Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius dates from 1890. These two dates provide different historical reference points within the town; together with the nearby monastery and fortress, they offer a broader perspective on the region’s history.

Local produce at events

Local produce has also featured at events in Kistanje. Dan sira i maslinovog ulja showcased local cheeses and olive oils; the programme also included a tasting of local products and cultural entertainment. At Buša na p'jatu, local family businesses displayed their products at the Eko market in Kistanje. These examples offer a concrete glimpse of the culinary themes that featured at local events.
