Cetina: River Source and Sacred Heritage
The Cetina River rises at an altitude of 385 metres on the northwestern slopes of Dinara, near the village of Cetina. The river shares its name with the village, and its source lies nearby. Alongside sacred architecture, this geographical setting is one of the defining themes of the trip.
The Church of Sv. Spasa
The ruins of the Church of Sv. Spasa, built in the 9th century, are located in Cetina. It is considered one of the best-preserved monuments of early medieval sacred architecture in Croatia; its western tower survives, and the church is listed in the Croatian Register of Cultural Goods. Its construction date, surviving western tower and registry listing provide three distinct historical points of reference. More than 1,100 graves have been found around the church. This means that the story of Sv. Spasa spans everything from architecture to archaeological finds in its surroundings.
The Cetina Springs
The natural features include the three large springs of Veliko vrilo, also called Glavaš, Vukovića vrilo and Batića vrilo. At Vukovića vrilo, clear blue-green karst water emerges from a speleological formation. This gives one of the three springs a specific landscape description in addition to its name. The Cetina springs form the protected hydrogeological natural monument of Vrela Cetine. The area covers 29.81 hectares and has been protected as a landscape of special importance since 1972.
When choosing your destination, these themes offer different focal points: Sv. Spasa represents early medieval cultural heritage through its construction date, surviving western tower and registry listing; the Vrela Cetine area is defined by its three named springs, the blue-green water at Vukovića vrilo and its protected status. This allows the cultural focus to be contrasted with the natural features.
Within the wider destination of Općina Civljane
The wider destination of Općina Civljane has further natural and cultural features to explore. Vukovića vrilo is the westernmost of the Cetina’s three large springs. Cetina is also home to the Orthodox Church of Hram Vaznesenja Gospodnjeg, built in 1940. Together with the Church of Sv. Spasa, which dates from the 9th century, it illustrates the different construction periods represented in the cultural heritage of Općina Civljane.
In the same wider destination, Pločasti most is another structure with a distinctive design. This low, simple stone bridge is made of 33 almost regular stećak slabs. It is considered a unique example of bridging a river with such slabs; the historic bridge is no longer in use. While Sv. Spasa stands out for its construction date, western tower and registry listing, Pločasti most is notable for its materials and construction method.
A footpath to Veliko vrelo, including steps, was built in 2021. If you plan to include it in your itinerary, check its current condition before visiting. The Vrelo Cetine cycling viewpoint and rest area has five parking spaces and bicycle service stations. Before setting out, check the current availability of the parking spaces and the condition of the service stations.
