Beretinec: Landscapes, Hiking Huts and Cultural History
Accommodation in Beretinec
Beretinec lies in a rural landscape of gentle hills and green fields. Hiking huts, a mountain bike trail, wine tastings and places of cultural and historical interest give a stay a range of possible focuses. When planning, you can consider whether you want to focus on activity, scenery, wine or history.
Rural Landscape and Getting Your Bearings
Gentle hills and green fields define Beretinec’s rural character. In the hilly southern part of the Municipality of Beretinec, the landscape includes forests and wooded areas, clearings, farmland, vineyards and orchards. There are also rural weekend and holiday homes. This description of the municipality’s southern area adds further features of the surroundings to the general impression of Beretinec’s landscape.
Two Hiking Huts, Different Impressions
The Vagon hiking hut is located on the ridge of Grabrovice Hill, near the villages of Črešnjevo and Ledinec. It is a decommissioned freight wagon converted for hiking use. In front of the hut, there is a covered area with benches for resting. The Ledinec hiking hut stands on a hilltop in the village of Ledinec; from there, it offers an unobstructed view of Ivanščica. At Vagon, the repurposed wagon and covered seating area define the place, while at Ledinec, it is the open view of Ivanščica. The two huts thus offer distinct highlights: a distinctive structure and a specific landscape view.
Mountain Biking on the XC Trail
The XC Beretinec mountain bike trail is 4.7 kilometres long. It was prepared jointly by members of Brdsko-biciklistički klub ASI Varaždin and the Municipality of Beretinec. In 2026, the trail is used for mountain bike training and the development of young riders; specific training arrangements may change. Alongside the hiking huts, a designated mountain bike trail is therefore part of the activity offering. Check current trail conditions before planning a ride.
Wine Tasting at Vinarija Blaguški
The Vinarija Blaguški wine shop welcomes individual and group visits by prior arrangement and is open on weekdays and weekends. It offers wine tastings accompanied by cold cuts from local family farms. If you plan a tasting, contact them in advance and confirm availability. This makes it possible to plan this culinary stop with its specific visiting requirements in mind.
Cultural History of Pil Pieta and Šaulovec Castle
Pil Pieta in Beretinec is registered as a cultural property under designation Z-3942. In 1791, Šaulovec Castle was converted from an earlier kurija into a castle; the complex has been protected as a monument of park architecture since 1970. The two dates mark distinct milestones: the building’s conversion and, later, its protected status. Some of the preserved furnishings, together with Šaulovec Castle, depict the life of the middle nobility in the Varaždin area at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The castle’s architectural history thus connects with a glimpse into the way of life of a particular era.

A relatively small park lies beside Šaulovec Castle in the Municipality of Beretinec. In front of the main façade is a decorative parterre garden, while behind the castle is a landscaped park area. The park was established at the end of the 19th century; the parterre garden was laid out in the early 20th century. The dates distinguish the park’s creation from the later addition of the formal garden area. Since 2020, Šaulovec Castle has been owned by Varaždin County; restoration has been initiated.
