Trakošćan brings together a castle, a permanent exhibition, a lake and a large forest park. Cultural history, lakeside paths and travel by car or bus offer different points of reference when planning your stay.

Castle history and exhibition

In the wider destination of Općina Bednja, the history of Dvor Trakošćan begins at the end of the 13th century: it was built then as a small observation fortress in the defence system of north-western Croatia, intended to monitor the route from Ptuj towards the Bednja Valley. Trakošćan was also developed into a representative castle surrounded by a forest park with rare trees, an artificial lake and garden buildings.

The permanent exhibition housed in the castle has been open to visitors since 1954. It displays exhibits from the 15th to the 19th century in rooms that retain their original historical interior layout. The collection is thus displayed in rooms whose historical arrangement has been preserved.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross in Trakošćan Park also offers a distinctive architectural focal point. Built in 1754 in the Baroque Classicist style, it retains a complete set of furnishings for a church interior.

Lake, forest park and fishing

Lake Trakošćan was formed in the mid-19th century by the construction of a dam across the Bednja and covers about 17 hectares. In the wider destination of Općina Bednja, the park and lake were laid out in the second half of the 19th century as a romantic landscape park and ornamental lake; the lake also served as a fishpond.

Trakošćan Forest Park covers 450 hectares of protected natural area. Its diverse flora and fauna combine with the lake to form a landscaped park. This makes the history of the castle and the development of the surrounding landscape central features of the same place.

The Put vila educational trail runs for around five kilometres around the lake. It begins at the foot of the castle, at the entrance to the complex. Part of the lakeside path is closed because of a landslide; check the signs on site before setting out.

The lake is also considered a special fishing spot. Fish species found there include carp, grass carp, pike, catfish and trout. If you plan to fish, confirm the conditions locally before your trip.

Plan your hike and journey

Another route option in the wider destination of Općina Bednja is the Trakošćan–Vrbanići–Ravna gora hiking route, listed as taking two hours. It starts at Hotel Trakošćan, opposite the castle. Hiking is possible on Ravna Gora; a viewpoint offers a view of Dvor Trakošćan, and footpaths lead to the castle. Check trail conditions before your hike.

Dvor Trakošćan can be reached by car via the main road connecting Zagreb and Maribor. There is no direct bus connection between Zagreb and Trakošćan; by bus, travel first to Varaždin and continue from there to Trakošćan. As bus connections and timetables can change, check your route before departure.
