Dolac: Fortifications, pottery finds and hiking trails
Accommodation in Dolac
Several historical highlights can be found around Dolac: medieval fortifications, the remains of a Romanesque church and archaeological sites with pottery. Dolački grad is also a checkpoint on a hiking loop on Požeška Gora. These places raise different questions about the landscape: how a fortification was built, what periods pottery finds indicate, and how a particular place fits into a hiking route. This distinction can help you choose the focus of your stay—history, architecture or hiking.
Medieval fortifications
Dolački grad is located above the villages of Dolac and Brestovac. Dolački Old Town, near Brestovac, consists of the remains of a medieval tower and a fortification. They were built in the 14th century to defend the entrance to the Požega Valley during Ottoman incursions. This gives the site a clear historical context: its function was connected with defending a regional approach. Only the southern half of the defensive tower remains at Dolački stari grad. The named fortifications therefore illustrate two distinct aspects: their former defensive function and the specific surviving remains of the tower.
Archaeological and architectural traces
Kuzma-Gradina has two concentric ramparts. “Concentric” means that the fortification lines run around the same centre; the term describes their layout. Late medieval and prehistoric pottery fragments have been found at the site. The ramparts reveal the form of the fortification, while the pottery finds add evidence of different periods.
The remains of the Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian, which are Romanesque, lie in Kuzma Forest near Dolac. Kuzma-Gradina is about 500 metres from these church remains. The approximate distance shows how the two historical points relate to each other, while their archaeological evidence remains distinct: here, the remains of a Romanesque church; there, ramparts and pottery finds.
An archaeological site with preventive protection status is located at Šašnice and Katunišća near Dolac. Based on medieval pottery fragments, the site has been identified as a medieval settlement. Its protection status adds an official designation to this historical classification.
Hiking and navigation
Dolački grad is one of the five checkpoints on the Five Fortresses hiking loop on Požeška Gora. As checkpoint 4, it lies at an elevation of 367 metres. A faintly marked trail leads from Dolac to Dolački grad; the walk takes about 45 minutes. Check the trail markings on site before setting out, as they may change. Dolački Old Town is reached via a forest road with a macadam surface. The distinction is useful when planning: the checkpoint number shows where Dolački grad fits into the loop, while the approximate walking time refers to the individual footpath from Dolac.
