Viganj between water sports and history
Accommodation in Viganj
Viganj is a coastal town where water sports and local history offer different points of interest. Windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing take place on the narrow Pelješac Channel; at the same time, the historic centre lies directly by the sea and is arranged around a Dominican monastery and its church. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first organize your travel plans around these interests and then compare the details of specific offers.
Water Sports and Recreational Facilities
Viganj offers windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing on the narrow Pelješac Channel. The wind is particularly strong there. Near Ponta Liberan Beach, there are schools that rent equipment and teach beginners to surf independently. A World Windsurfing Championship was held in Viganj in July 2013.
Public recreational facilities include a floodlit five-a-side football pitch and outdoor fitness areas, each with six pieces of equipment. Changing facilities and showers are also available. The activities described therefore extend beyond the water sports on the channel: football and outdoor fitness are additional sporting options to consider when planning your time in Viganj.
The Nakovana climbing area is located near Viganj. It lies on the road between Viganj and Nakovana, in a protected area below Grad Hill. Its two sectors, King Aragon and King Pleurat, have a total of 24 climbing routes. Alongside the water sports in town, Nakovana is a named climbing area nearby and another outdoor option.
Historic Centre and Churches
Viganj’s historic centre lies directly on the coast. It is arranged around a Dominican monastery built in the 17th century and its church; the Dominican complex is the oldest part of the settlement by the sea. The construction has a specific date associated with its approval: in 1671, the Bishop of Ston, Petar Luccari, authorized the Pelješac shipowner Marko Krstelj to build the Dominican monastery and the Church of Gospe od Rozarija in Viganj.
Another ecclesiastical landmark is the present-day Church of St. Michael in Viganj, built in 1740. Its architectural features include a Baroque-style portal, four oval windows, a rose window and a three-arched bell gable. While the 17th century and the 1671 approval provide a point of reference for the Dominican complex, the Church of St. Michael connects the town with the year 1740 and a clearly identifiable set of architectural details. Kuvenat is a former Dominican monastery and is now used as Viganj’s cultural centre.
