Osobjava stretches along the western slopes of Rota. The area’s history and coastal landscape give this destination a cultural and historical focus. Key points of interest include the settlements of Osobjava and Stinjiva, as well as traces from various historical periods. Church remains, a fortress and settlement traces offer different ways to explore the history of the area.

The history of Osobjava and Stinjiva

Osobjava is mentioned in a land contract dating from 1392. Stinjiva was already inhabited in the 14th century. Osobjava and Stinjiva are considered the area’s two foundational settlements. The dates mark different historical points of reference: 1392 is associated with the mention of Osobjava, while the 14th century marks Stinjiva’s early settlement.

A family from the area around Konjic settled in Osobjava in 1464. The present-day settlement developed further after the arrival of refugees. Its settlement history includes refugees from the Neretva region and Herzegovina, as well as citizens of Dubrovnik who left Brštanik and Driva ahead of the Ottoman advance. The area’s history therefore encompasses both individual family stories and the movements of different population groups.

Churches, a fortress and historical landmarks

Osobjava’s cultural heritage includes the Church of Our Lady of Health, the ruins and remains of the Church of St Martin with stećci, the Stinjiva Fortress and the villa rustica site near Pod Starinama. Glavica sv. Jurja lies at an elevation of 77 metres. These names provide specific points of reference as you explore the area’s history and cultural heritage.

A damaged stone column stands by the roadside in Osobjava. It was made for the Prince’s Palace in Dubrovnik and remains as a historical testament to the local quarry. Its original purpose links a building in Dubrovnik with an object preserved in Osobjava.

Rota and the coastal landscape

The northern coastal landscape from Cape Rat, via Stinjiva Bay, to Osobjava is considered a particularly valuable natural landscape. Stinjiva Bay is especially notable. Together with Rota’s western slopes, this stretch of coast provides another landscape point of reference for understanding Osobjava’s setting.

Osobjava within the wider destination of Janjina

Within the wider destination of Janjina, the western part of the Municipality of Janjina includes hilly peaks and the northern slopes of Rota towards Osobjava and the Neretva Channel. Around Janjina, Popova Luka and Zabrežje, vineyards alternate with maquis and karst on the northern slopes of Mataružnica. Vineyards planted with Plavac mali and other well-known grape varieties also shape the character of Janjina.

The wider destination’s history also stretches far back: in the Janjina area, the settlement of the Pelješac Peninsula can be traced from prehistoric times through the Illyrians and Romans to the present day. Hiking trails and marked cycling routes are part of the Municipality of Janjina’s tourism infrastructure. Pebble beaches are located in Sreser and Drače; the small group of islands off Sreser can be explored by kayak and smaller boats.
