Punat brings together coastal landscapes, island culture and maritime activities. The sheltered Puntarska draga, narrow stone streets, nearby pebble beaches, vineyards and olive groves define the town; the islet of Košljun is also part of its surroundings.

Marina, Waterfront and Košljun

The Marina Punat offers extensive nautical infrastructure in Puntarska draga, with around 1,200 berths and services for boats. At the central harbour, services include launching and hauling out small boats up to 5 metres long. Košljun can only be reached by sea; passenger boats depart from the waterfront in Punat. As boat availability is seasonal, it is best to check conditions before your trip.

Košljun has been protected as a special forest nature reserve since 1969. The island has 540 identified plant species, an olive grove and a lush forest of holm oaks and flowering ashes. Four museums focus on archaeological, religious, ethnographic and natural history topics. The ethnographic museum contains items belonging to fishermen and farmers from Krk, as well as folk costumes from across the island. The monastery library holds around 30,000 titles, including an atlas by Ptolemy printed in Venice in 1511, one of only three surviving copies.

Paths, Nature and Activities

The Pastirske staze shepherds’ paths lead from Punat towards the highest peaks on the island of Krk, including Obzovo at 568 metres. Along the paths are dry-stone walls, shepherds’ shelters, cisterns, sheep pens, karst pools, pastures and viewpoints. Possible sightings of protected griffon vultures, as well as deer, hares, foxes, butterflies, lizards, snakes and frogs, depend on the season and are not guaranteed. The Tri križi themed trail introduces visitors to coastal karst and offers views of Puntarska draga.

At the main beach, Punat Underwater Park offers a guided underwater walk for non-divers. You can discover marine flora and fauna, as well as an underwater pirate treasure theme. Check seasonal operating conditions before your visit. Sailing is also on offer: the NAS Sailing Center runs a sailing school and offers daily sailboat rentals, which may be available seasonally. Taxi boats from Punat take visitors to secluded white pebble beaches for swimming; boat trips may depend on the season and weather.

Cuisine and Local Traditions

Restaurants and taverns in Punat serve Krk lamb with šurlice, homemade pršut, Kvarner scampi and fish prepared with Punat olive oil. The dishes on the menu vary by establishment and season. The olive harvest remains a social event for the residents of Punat and the island of Krk.

In the wider destination of Općina Punat

In the wider destination of Općina Punat, Puntarska draga is a large, shallow bay in the inner part of the Gulf of Krk. It is about 3 km long and up to about 2 km wide. The Buka sea channel, about 150 to 200 metres wide, connects it to the open sea. The walk to the lower plateaus takes 30 minutes to an hour; the ground is rocky, with grass or soil in places.

Punat’s cultural heritage includes the “Toš” Gallery in the old town, in Klančić Lane. It was created from a former traditional space where olives were ground by hand, and displays paintings, sculptures and other works of art in an almost authentic ethnographic setting. The Stari Toš Interpretation Centre preserves fully intact equipment for traditional olive oil production and presents the history of olive cultivation, harvesting and processing. In Buka, Punat, stands the Church of St Nicholas (Sv. Nikole), built in 1911 as a protective church for sailors, travellers and children. A mass is held there every year on 6 December in memory of all sailors.
