Omišalj: Roman Heritage and Coastal Trails
Accommodation in Omisalj
Omišalj combines a historic town center with archaeological heritage, a landscaped park and a pine-shaded bay. If you are looking for hotels in Omišalj, you can plan your trip around whether you want to focus mainly on Roman and early Christian history, a walk through the park or exercise along a cultural and historical route.
Roman and Early Christian Heritage
The archaeological complex of Municipium Flavium Fulfinum and Mirine includes the remains of a Roman town dating from the second half of the 1st century, as well as an early Christian basilica from the 5th century. Recognizable remains of Roman buildings include parts of the forum, with a forum temple, a basilica and tabernae. The different building phases give the site two historical focal points: the Roman town and the early Christian structure.
The restored and partially reconstructed narthex of the Mirine Basilica contains an exhibition of movable archaeological finds and an early Christian sarcophagus in situ. At the Lapidarium, a collection of movable cultural heritage objects displays items connected with the monuments preserved in situ around the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary. An inscription from 94 AD records the construction of the Fulfinum aqueduct; a tombstone from 1477 bears a Glagolitic inscription and symbols of abbatial rank.
Another architectural detail is Omišalj’s rose window: carved from a single piece of stone, it dates from 1405.
Trails, Park and Bay
A hiking route brings several of these themes together outdoors. The Omišalj–Fulfinum Mirine–Fortičina–Omišalj trail connects the historic town center, Dubec Park, Pesja Bay, Sepen Bay, the archaeological complex of Fulfinum and Mirine, and the remains of Fortičina fortress. It is suitable for families and recreational hikers who want to combine physical activity with cultural exploration.
Fortičina is a hilltop site with the remains of a castle associated with the Princes of Krk, which was in use in the late 12th and 13th centuries. Dubec Park is a monument of landscape architecture. Its development began gradually in 1925 under the local spa commission; the landscaping included regulating existing footpaths and arranging native vegetation.
A pine forest provides shade at Pesja Bay. There is a picnic area and a volleyball court; maintenance of the beach facilities may vary by season. If these amenities are important to your stay, check their condition before visiting.
