Two themes provide clear guidance when choosing a stay in Batomalj: marked trails and religious history. The educational trail has a specified length and approximate walking time; churches, the sanctuary and traditional architectural styles offer different historical perspectives. This lets you consider before booking whether hiking, sacred history or both are most important for your trip.

Trails and Nature

The Baška–Zarok–Batomalj–Pod Lipicu educational trail is six kilometres long and takes about 2.5 hours to walk. It introduces local ethnological heritage and the biodiversity of endemic flora and fauna. Vela Rika is also a notable feature of the trail: the watercourse is considered the only permanent watercourse on the Adriatic islands; its upper reaches contain waterfalls and mills.

The marked Pastirske staze trails connect Batomalj with Punat, Draga Bašćanska, Stara Baška, Jurandvor and Baška. Two starting points in Stara Baška lead towards Batomalj. The information answers different planning questions: the educational trail details its length and approximate walking time, while the Pastirske staze show the connections between named places.

Sanctuaries and History

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Gorica is right next to Batomalj. The church of the same name was built in 1415 and is considered one of Croatia’s oldest Marian sanctuaries. It can be reached by road or by climbing 237 steps. The 1425 Statute of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Gorica is the oldest Croatian brotherhood statute written in the Glagolitic script.

The Church of St. Nicholas offers another historical perspective: it dates from 1676 and houses a painting believed to date from the 13th century. The painting is associated with an earlier church, whose ruins have been preserved at the Sveti Miluka site south of the settlement. The two churches thus point to different periods: St. Nicholas to the history of the settlement, and the painting to an even earlier church tradition.

The Lipica Mrgar

One of the renowned mrgari of Baška is located at the Lipica site. The restored Lipica mrgar is a multi-compartment sheep pen with a flower-shaped ground plan. The mrgari are regarded as stone flowers of fragile beauty. The structure also had a practical purpose: the sheep pen was used to separate sheep belonging to different owners. The structure therefore reveals both a distinctive form of traditional architecture and its former use.
