Korcula brings together historic urban architecture, the Moreška tradition, trails on the islands and regional cuisine. These offerings have different focuses: the history of culture shapes the town of Korčula, while the archipelago, natural areas and culinary events open up other facets of trip planning.

Old Town and Cultural Traditions

The UNESCO Tentative List describes the historic town of Korčula as an exceptional example of late medieval urban planning and architecture. The entire historic town is also listed in the Register of Monuments of the Republic of Croatia. A distinctive building is the Cathedral of St. Mark, an outstanding example of Gothic-Renaissance architecture. The Korčula Town Museum is housed in the Renaissance Gabrielis Palace.

Another cultural distinction is Moreška: the sword dance has been performed for over 400 years and is a defining cultural symbol of the island of Korčula. Korčula is the only place where Moreška has been preserved as a distinct local tradition. Visitors can enjoy regular performances during the summer months, especially in the town of Korčula. Check the current performance calendar before your trip.

A specific landmark also helps with finding your way around town: in the Sveti Antun district, a stone staircase with 101 steps leads to the Church of St. Anthony of Padua.

Archipelago, Nature and Trails

The Korčula Archipelago consists of small islands and reefs off the town of Korčula, on the eastern side of the island. Activities mentioned there include diving on reefs, boat trips, kayaking and swimming. Check sea conditions and operators’ offerings before taking boat trips.

Different locations and types of trails are available for hiking. The Camino Korčula is a 160-kilometre circular route that starts and ends in the town of Korčula; check route details before your trip. On Badija, a scenic hiking trail runs around the island. Badija can be reached by regular boat services during the summer season. Check the current services in advance.

Kočje is a protected natural area with distinctive dolomite rock formations and lush vegetation. The Kočje trail starts in the hamlet of Brdo above Žrnovo and is suited to nature lovers and hikers. The options are therefore clearly distinct: from a long circular route that starts and ends in town, to a trail around an island, to a hiking trail whose starting point is near Žrnovo.

Žrnovski Makaruni and Culinary Events

Žrnovo is known for Žrnovski makaruni, a hand-rolled pasta made according to local tradition. The Makarunada takes place there every August. The program includes workshops as well as the preparation and tasting of Žrnovski makaruni; check the current event calendar if you would like to include it in your trip plans.

The Slow Food Festival Korčula has a broader culinary focus: it promotes locally grown food and the preservation of culinary traditions. For planning your dates, it is worth noting the differences: Moreška is performed regularly during the summer months, while the Makarunada takes place every year in August. Check the current calendars for both events before your trip.
