Babići: Brass Band Music, Karst and Trails
Accommodation in Babići
Babići brings together a strong brass band tradition, local cultural heritage and a landscape shaped by karst. This offers clear thematic starting points when choosing a destination: music history, village culture, historical traces and trails. If you are considering a stay in Babići, these themes can help you understand the character of the place in terms of your interests.
Brass Band Music and Cultural Life
The brass band tradition in Babići dates back more than a century. The Istrian Brass Band Gathering began in Babići on 3 October 1976; for its 50th edition, it returned to the settlement. Babići is therefore associated both with the gathering’s beginning and with a later edition. For travellers interested in regional music, this history offers a concrete way to explore the cultural character of the place.
The San Lorenzo-Babici mixed choir was founded in 1997 and sings popular songs from Istria, Croatia and Italy. The men’s group I Cantadori also preserves older songs associated with rural life in Istria. The musical connections therefore include both popular songs from several places of origin and older songs from rural life.
Bobićada and Local Cuisine
Bobićada is a traditional local festival organised by the Lovrečica-Babići local committee. The 14th edition took place in 2019. The festival includes a bean celebration, live music by the band ITD and the preparation of a maneštra with Istrian bobići. If attending a festival is important to your trip, check the event date in advance.
Karst, Agriculture and Historical Traces
The Mamiloni area has numerous karst sinkholes; the Golubinka cave is the largest one identified there. The landscape therefore offers a geological point of interest distinct from the place’s cultural themes. The Babići-Vecchiutti site is also characterised by agriculture and has two historic brick kilns. These add traces of local history to the landscape.
The San Lorenzo-Babici area was also inhabited during Roman times. Together with the historic brick kilns and karst sinkholes, this offers different perspectives on the surroundings: geological, agricultural and historical. You can use these themes as a guide when exploring the history and landscape of Babići.
Trails and Cycling Routes
Around Babići, old paths are understood to connect the settlement with neighbouring villages. In 2020 and 2021, walks took place along paths around Babići towards Canal, Semari and Cuscieti. These directions provide specific place references for the local trail network. For a tour today, check trail conditions and access locally.
Cyclists can also explore two different routes. One cycling tour starting in Novigrad passes through Gornji Babići and Škrinjari. Another route runs through Babići and continues towards Lovrečica. The routes therefore differ in both their starting points and the sections through the named places. Check road conditions again before setting off.
