Get to know Muntrilj through three main themes: its karst landscape, cultural and historical sites, and cycling and hiking routes. When choosing a destination, consider whether you want your stay to focus on scenery, outdoor activities or local culture. In addition, the family-run Vina Paljuh winery in Muntrilj produces wine and spirits, connecting it with the area's traditional wine-growing heritage.

Landscape and Architecture in Muntrilj

Muntrilj lies on a limestone plateau dotted with numerous karst depressions. Traditional agriculture includes viticulture, grain growing and, to a lesser extent, livestock farming. On the western edge of the village stands the 17th-century cemetery chapel of St. Roch, with a separate bell tower. Together, the geological landscape and this distinctive building represent different aspects of the local character.

Cycling and Hiking

The Duhići–Karojba–Duhići cycling route (620) is 22 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty. Muntrilj is listed as an alternative starting point for the route. Other details given are an elevation gain of 270 metres and a duration of two hours. As official route specifications may be updated, check the details before setting out. Attractions along the route include the Church of St. Andrew and the summit of Glogovac; it also passes by Pajićka Pond. Another route listing passes the cemetery and heads towards the Church of St. Roch near Muntrilj.

Trail Montreo is a circular hiking route that starts in Duhići and continues towards Muntrilj. Along the way, you reach the Sopajac sinkhole, also known as Veliki dol, and the Badavca spring. This hike is therefore quite different from the moderately difficult cycling route 620: Trail Montreo is designed as a circular route for hikers, whereas route 620 is described by its length, elevation gain and duration.

Wine and Regional Character

Vina Paljuh is a family-run business in the village of Muntrilj that has produced wine and spirits for three generations. This reflects the area's traditional viticulture, which, alongside grain growing and some livestock farming, is part of local agriculture. In the wider destination of Općina Tinjan, prosciutto is also part of the culinary scene: in 2006, Tinjan declared itself the municipality of Istrian prosciutto. The tradition of high-quality smoked prosciutto is preserved in the Tinjan area by numerous registered prosciutto producers.

Culture and Routes in Općina Tinjan

Other cultural sites in the wider destination of Općina Tinjan span a broad range of periods. The old cemetery Church of the Holy Cross in Tinjan was built in the 13th century in the Romanesque style; bricked-up crenellations dating from the 14th century can be seen among the visible remains of the older fortification wall. The Parish Church of St. Simon and St. Jude Thaddeus dates from the 18th century and is an example of Istrian late Baroque architecture. The Baroque Depiera House has a projecting chimney dated 1670. Its Neoclassical arcaded entrance and cistern date from 1820.

Cyclists can also find another point of comparison in Općina Tinjan: the Jure Grando circular route starts in Kringa, is 27.7 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty. It has a total elevation difference of 378 metres. It is longer than the 22-kilometre route 620; both routes are classified as moderately difficult. Jure Grando connects the cycling networks of the municipalities of Kanfanar, Sveti Lovreč and Tinjan, linking the Istrian interior with the coast.

In Tinjan, a festival of Kosir knives and other blacksmith crafts is traditionally held on St. Simon's Day, attracting blacksmiths from all over Istria. If you are planning to attend, check the dates and programme for the relevant year.
