Discover Divšići: History and Culture
Accommodation in Divšići
Divšići combines a distinctive local history with a historic religious building. The settlement developed in the 16th century as part of a Venetian resettlement program for refugees from Dalmatia fleeing the Ottomans. South of Divšići stands the 18th-century chapel of Saint Vitus and Saint Modestus. Its facade has a bell gable, with a portico in front.
Općina Marčana: Coast and Orientation
For broader orientation, Divšići can be placed within the wider travel destination of Općina Marčana. The municipality of Marčana lies north of Pula, at the crossroads of the Pula–Labin and Vodnjan–Krnica roads. Its indented coastline is 36 kilometers long, stretching in the north from Raša Bay to Budava Bay in the south. The coast drops steeply into the deep waters of the Adriatic and includes green peninsulas and hidden coves. The local history of Divšići and the coastal landscape of Općina Marčana are therefore two distinct aspects of the destination.
Routes and Activities in Općina Marčana
The regional offerings include cycling and hiking trails, as well as the Camino South Istria pilgrimage route. The 193-kilometer route passes through the municipality of Marčana. The wider destination also has snorkeling spots and opportunities for excursions by boat, kayak, horse, or bicycle. This range extends from land-based trails to water activities, and the experiences do not all have the same character.
One specific coastal spot is Školjić Beach: it is 2.5 kilometers from Kavran and can be reached via a local road and gravel tracks. Two underwater arches lie at a depth of three meters, making them suitable for swimming through. For a trip to the water, this spot offers a different perspective from the inland trails.
Traditional dishes and products are also part of the regional picture of Općina Marčana. Restaurants and taverns are joined by local producers of wine, olive oil, cheese, and honey. Those exploring the area’s culinary scene can consider both dining and products from the region.
Culture and History Across the Wider Destination
In Rakalj, the birthplace of Mijo Mirković houses a memorial collection about his life, literary work, and legacy, as well as the local pottery tradition. The House of Cycling in Loborika has a different focus: it displays historical results, photographs, medals, and trophies of BK Loborika, as well as a video about the life and sporting achievements of cyclist Nevio Valčić. The two collections offer insights into different cultural topics in Općina Marčana.
Other historical landmarks can be found in several of the municipality’s settlements. The parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Marčana dates from the 15th century; the main altar of the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Mutvoran was created in 1533. Stari Rakalj is home to the ruins of a former medieval castle and the Church of St. Agnes. From Rakalj, a trail about two kilometers long passes through Mediterranean maquis and along old dry-stone walls to the St. Agnes of Rakalj viewpoint.
A recurring event is also part of the regional overview: the pilgrimage to Our Lady of Health, at the church of the same name in Hreljići, takes place every year on the second Sunday in October. Since the exact program may change, it is advisable to check the dates for the relevant year in advance.
