Semić combines hiking routes with viewpoints, rural landscapes and local history dating back to the Middle Ages. For planning your trip, the different route options offer a practical starting point; the chapel, festival and local cuisine add to the picture of the village.

Hiking on Two Different Routes

The Lupogliano-Mahrenfels loop runs from Lupoglav through Semić and Kras and back to Lupoglav. After passing through Pristava, the path climbs via steps towards Semić. A municipal route description dated November 15, 2024, gives this route. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

A second route is the approximately 7 km Semić–Brest–Semić trail. It starts at the old school in Semić, leads to the Pod Šćikovico viewpoint, passes through forest and meadows, and returns via Brest. On foot, the route takes about 1 hour 50 minutes. If you are planning around an approximate time, this trail offers a guide to the time and distance involved; the Lupogliano-Mahrenfels loop can be assessed by its circular route and the steps climbing towards Semić.

Viewpoints and Landscape

The Učka–Semić area, in the northern part of Učka, is classified as a significant landscape. Above Semić is a viewpoint overlooking the Istrian landscape, intended for visitors and day-trippers seeking relaxation. The Semić–Brest trail also includes Pod Šćikovico and Nad Krog, viewpoints with designated rest areas: Pod Šćikovico offers views over Lupoglav and the surrounding area, while Nad Krog looks towards Vranja, Boljun and the wider surrounding area. The two points also provide designated places to pause along the route. The meadows around Semić are part of the rural landscape, too: Istrian cattle graze there.

Chapel, Local History and Traditions

The Chapel of Saint Lawrence dates from the second half of the 18th century and has a bell tower on its façade. Below it is an information board with a hiking map. This places a practical resource for hikers right alongside a historic local landmark.

Semić was first mentioned in 1327. After the fall of Klis, Dalmatian refugees were settled in Semić and the surrounding villages. These details add the village’s first recorded mention and a history of settlement to the chapel’s story.

Lovrečeva is a folk festival held in Semići, within Lupoglav. A 2024 report describes the celebration as annual and mentions a cultural program and dancing; dates and individual program items may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the festival dates for the relevant year.

The cuisine also has a local connection: Žbravoada is considered a traditional dish from Semić and is a stew made with fresh cabbage.
