Accommodation in Lanišće
Lanišće lies on the road from Lupoglav towards Rašpor and other villages in Ćićarija. The village is situated on a south-facing slope below Orljak, at the edge of a fertile field. Its position on the road and its setting in the landscape offer two distinct points of reference when choosing a destination. Alongside these geographical features, the parish church, the memory of Miroslav Bulešić, and Bugarenje, rooted in Ćićarija, reflect other aspects of the village’s history.
Parish Church and Building History
The parish church of Saints Cantius, Cantianus, and Cantianilla was built in 1927 on the site of a church dating from 1609. The older complex preserves a significant Renaissance bell tower. Inside the church are a Gothic wooden crucifix and three marble altars, brought here from the Cathedral of Trieste in 1928. The dates mark different stages: 1609 refers to the site of the earlier church, 1927 to the construction of the church, and 1928 to the transfer of the altars. This makes it possible to distinguish chronologically between the building’s construction and the origin of its furnishings.
Parish History and Remembrance
The parish of Lanišće was founded in 1609, and its archive has been preserved since 1632. The year 1609 therefore appears in two distinct contexts: as the year the parish was founded and as the date of the church on whose site the 1927 building was erected. The year 1632 belongs to the history of the archive. The parish office is where the priest Miroslav Bulešić was killed on 24 August 1947. The village’s history thus encompasses both early ecclesiastical milestones and a precisely dated event from the 20th century.
Bugarenje and Local Cultural History
The old Mass in Lanišće is a form of Bugarenje, a tradition rooted in Ćićarija. The women’s vocal group Ženska vokalna skupina Lanišće was founded in 1976, is still active, performs in public, and preserves Bugarenje. This cultural tradition thus appears in two distinct contexts: as a form of the old Mass and in the work of a singing group. If you would like to include a public performance in your trip, check for current dates in advance.
The historical economic tradition of Lanišće includes charcoal making. The village is also the birthplace of folk-song revivalist Antun Žmak. These connections extend the village’s history beyond sacred architecture: one concerns a former economic activity, the other a figure in the history of folk song.
Pilgrimage and Visit Planning
In October 2023, Lanišće was the first stop on a pilgrimage along the paths of Blessed Miroslav Bulešić. During a pilgrimage that same month, pilgrims were also shown items from a memorial collection in the parish house. If you would like to include the collection in your travel plans, check in advance whether a visit is possible. If you are planning a route along the pilgrimage paths, first find out whether and how they can currently be used. These two notes address different questions: visiting the collection in the parish house and planning a route along the pilgrimage paths.
Choosing a Hotel for Your Trip
If you choose hotels based on the character of the destination, Lanišće offers a focus on sacred architecture, local history, and regional culture. The tradition of Bugarenje and the landscape below Orljak add cultural and geographical dimensions to this perspective. This can help you decide whether the village’s historical and cultural themes suit your planned trip.
