Two themes come together in Škropeti: the history of the Church of Blessed Alojzije Stepinac and an official Istria road cycling route that passes through the village. Nearby landscapes and cultural destinations, as well as other sights in the wider destination of Općina Karojba, add to the picture.

The Church of Blessed Alojzije Stepinac

The church in Škropeti was built between 1999 and 2010 and consecrated on 7 May 2010. It was established at the initiative of local residents, who built it through communal effort. Relics of Blessed Alojzije Stepinac are kept at the altar. The building therefore combines a specific consecration date with a locally driven story of its creation.

The architecture also offers several ways to understand the church. The design of most architectural elements is inspired by the Euphrasian Basilica, while the architecture also reflects historic features of Istrian churches. Its form includes a porch and a bell tower. Four stained-glass windows depict Saint Mauro, Blessed Miroslav Bulešić, Saint John Paul II and Mother Teresa. The windows thus place four clearly identified religious figures alongside the architectural references. The church furnishings also include an organ with two manuals and a pedal.

Cycling route and nearby landscape

The official Istria road cycling route passes through Škropeti. A separate option for hikers is the nearby Trail Montreo (718), a circular hiking trail. These refer to different activities and locations: the cycling route passes through the village, while the hiking trail is in the surrounding area.

Near Škropeti, Sopajac is considered the largest and deepest doline in Istria. Reaching its floor is difficult because of the rugged terrain and vegetation. If you are interested in this landscape feature, take this limitation into account when planning. The doline can therefore be a point of interest for your trip without overlooking the challenging access.

Gatherings and practical information

Susreti prijateljstva is a sports and social gathering held in Škropeti for people with intellectual disabilities and their friends. A report from 2022 describes more than 100 participants as typical, including people from schools, social care institutions, disability associations and the general public. According to the report, the gathering was held annually in May as part of the programme for the National Day of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the latest dates before your trip.

More culture in the wider destination of Općina Karojba

The wider destination of Općina Karojba has other distinct cultural and landscape features. The Istrian Boundary Dispute Trail, Put Istarskog razvoda, is a themed route with information panels in four languages, starting at the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes. Badavca is a historic boundary spring with a cross carved in stone and rustic stone monuments.

The architectural history of the churches also offers regional points of comparison. The single-nave parish Church of All Saints in Karojba was built in 1580, expanded in 1840 and 1913, and restored in 1986. In nearby Rakotule, the Church of Saint Nicholas dates from the 14th century and was expanded in the 15th century. Its painted plaster surface bears a Glagolitic graffiti inscription.

The landscape heritage of the wider destination of Općina Karojba also includes the Ćetiri Pinije u Karojbi botanical natural monument, which has been protected since 1966. The four pines stand beside the road between Karojba and Pazin. The oldest trunk has a circumference of 3.30 metres and is 14.5 metres tall. These regional examples add to the picture of Škropeti without conflating the places or their respective sights.
