Roc: Frescoes, Churches and Glagolitic History
Accommodation in Roc
Roc: Fortifications and a Written Heritage
Roc brings together medieval fortification history, Romanesque churches and the Glagolitic script tradition. The town lies below the Ćićarija range, along the Mirna Valley. In the Middle Ages, Roc developed into a fortified castle complex with defensive walls, towers, and a Large and Small Gate. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Roc was a center of Croatian literary culture, publishing, and printing based on the Glagolitic script. These themes offer different ways to explore the town’s history: the fortifications tell of its medieval development, while writing and printing reveal another strand of its past.
Churches and Frescoes
The parish church of Saint Bartholomew is a protected cultural heritage site and part of Roc’s historic ensemble. The nave’s walls and ceiling feature elaborate stucco work dating from 1785. Previously unknown medieval wall paintings were discovered beneath more recent surfaces. The contrast between the stucco and the newly discovered paintings reveals different phases of decoration.
The Romanesque church of Saint Roch contains two layers of frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries. The later layer depicts Christ in Glory and the twelve Apostles. The church of Saint Anthony the Abbot adds to the sacred heritage as a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. Thus, Roc brings together different periods in the history of churches and painting.
Glagolitic Tradition and Creative Experiences
A replica of Gutenberg’s Glagolitic printing press can be visited by prior appointment. Confirm your appointment before visiting. The Small Glagolitic Academy takes place annually and is attended by sixth-grade students from across Croatia. This means that Glagolitic heritage spans both the historic printing tradition and a recurring educational program.
The Buon Fresco workshop combines a presentation of the medieval frescoes in the church of Saint Roch with the creation of your own fresco at the Atelje Freska-Vidović studio. Participants take their finished fresco home as a traditional souvenir. Check the workshop’s availability before your trip.
Music and the Aleja glagoljaša
Z armoniku v RoÄŤ is an annual international gathering of diatonic accordion players in Roc. The program includes music workshops, lectures, and presentations on Istrian folk instruments. The 2026 edition was scheduled for May 9; that date has already passed.
Near Roc, below the town, begins the Aleja glagoljaša, which follows the road toward Hum. The memorial complex comprises eleven Glagolitic monuments, including the Column of the Chakavian Assembly, a Glagolitic lapidarium, and the Hum Gate. As a memorial route, it extends the theme of Glagolitic heritage beyond individual churches and the printing tradition.
Choose When to Travel
When choosing when to travel, it helps to distinguish between the town’s history and activities tied to specific dates. Churches, frescoes, and fortification history form the historical focus; the academy and music gathering are annual events, while visiting the printing press replica requires a prior appointment. If you are looking for a hotel in Roc, plan your trip around the cultural theme that interests you and check the specific dates.
