Getting your bearings and discovering Barban’s history
The Barban visitor centre is located in the town’s old loggia. It is dedicated to the history, monuments, culture, customs and traditional clothing associated with Barban and the Trka na prstenac. It offers an introduction to themes you will encounter again as you walk around the town.
Within the wider destination of Općina Barban, Barban developed into a fortified settlement over the course of history. Its layout included walls, round and square towers, bastions, large and small town gates, and a castle. The history of its buildings can also be seen in its churches: the parish church of St Nicholas was built in 1701 and completed as a Baroque church in 1708. Inside are a Gothic custodia from the 15th century, a stone baptismal font and wall frescoes.
The Church of St Anthony in Barban reflects a different era: it is a late-medieval Romanesque church from the late 14th century. Its features include early 15th-century frescoes and 16th-century Glagolitic graffiti. The Church of St James the Apostle is also located in Barban, within the wider destination of Općina Barban. It contains the only surviving fresco cycle in Istria depicting the legend of St James.
The Trka na prstenac and regional culture
The Trka na prstenac dates back to 1696 and was revived in 1976. In 2016, it was added to Croatia’s list of intangible cultural heritage. At the museum dedicated to the Trka na prstenac, visitors can use a 3D headset and a lance to try virtually to hit the ring. If you are planning your trip around the event, check the dates for your travel year; if you plan to visit the museum, it is advisable to check the current access arrangements.
The Barbanski rančin also brings history and craftsmanship together: the name refers to an 11th-century earring found at Gradina near Barban, which is registered as a Croatian cultural asset. Replicas are made as traditional souvenirs. This clearly distinguishes the historic original from the replicas made today.
Local folklore is kept alive by KUD Barban. Its groups include dancers, traditional singers and musicians who play traditional instruments; the association presents its work at folklore festivals. This adds a living cultural tradition to the historic buildings.
