Rudina consists of two rural settlements: Velike Rudine and Male Rudine lie about 500 metres apart. The landscape settings, cultural sites and paths to the beaches can be associated with the respective settlements. If you are looking for hotels in Rudina, you can first decide whether to focus on coastal paths, cycling or local history.

Two Settlements with Different Landscape Settings

Velike Rudine lies on the ridge of the Kabal Peninsula, facing Stari Grad Bay. Male Rudine lies on slopes overlooking the Hvar Channel, opposite Bol on Brač. The two settlements therefore have different landscape settings: the ridge facing the bay and the slopes facing the channel.

History and Cultural Heritage in Rudina

Two historical dates should be distinguished for Velike Rudine: the settlement dates from the 15th century, but is mentioned as early as the 14th century. Male Rudine was established in the 17th century by settlers from Gdinj. The two rural settlements therefore originated in different centuries.

The Church of Saint Roch stands in Velike Rudine; Male Rudine has a chapel dedicated to Saint Roch. Rudina’s buildings and ruins are considered protected cultural heritage. The church and chapel are two distinct religious buildings, both associated with Saint Roch.

To the Beaches and Out Cycling

From Male Rudine, you can walk to the beaches of Žukova, Lisna, Duboka and Trovna. The walk takes approximately ten minutes. Treat this as a guide: the exact starting point and trail conditions may affect the time it takes to reach them.

Official cycling route 21 continues across the Kabal Peninsula to Rudina, after passing through Vrbanj, Svirče and Grebišće. The tourist board provides a GPS file and notes that some parts of the route are not perfectly marked. Check the markers and trail conditions before setting out. When planning your ride, you can take into account both the digital navigation and the note about incomplete markings.

Stari Grad in the Wider Travel Context

The Kabal 706 loop starts in the centre of Stari Grad, continues to the settlement of Rudina, and returns to Stari Grad via Kabal and Arkada. It forms a circuit with a start, destination and return leg; official cycling route 21, in turn, crosses the Kabal Peninsula to Rudina. These provide different points of reference for comparing the routes: the loop via Kabal and Arkada on the one hand, and the sequence of Vrbanj, Svirče and Grebišće, together with the note about route markings, on the other.

In the wider travel destination of Stari Grad, the Stari Grad Plain (Starogradsko polje) is a cultural landscape shaped over millennia. Its rectangular plots are bordered by dry-stone walls. This landscape context adds another cultural heritage theme in the Stari Grad destination to Rudina’s local history.

The architectural history of Stari Grad also offers points of interest for culture enthusiasts. The Dominican Monastery of Saint Peter the Martyr was founded in 1482 and fortified with two round towers after the Turkish attack on the island of Hvar at the end of the 16th century. The museum in the monastery preserves the oldest inscriptions in the Greek language found in Croatia. Stari Grad is also home to the Church of Saint Stephen, a Baroque building whose construction began in 1605.
