Komin brings together a history of settlement, cultural heritage, regional agriculture and activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Komin, these themes can help you choose what to explore based on your travel interests.

A Riverside Setting Beneath the Mountain

Komin extends for about two kilometres parallel to the Neretva and lies below Donja gora. The description of the location combines two distinct geographical features: the Neretva provides the reference for the settlement’s orientation, while Donja gora indicates that it lies below the mountain. This places Komin both along the river and below Donja gora.

Settlement History and Transport Routes

About 400 years ago, following a malaria epidemic, Komin was relocated around six kilometres upstream. A road built by Napoleon runs through Komin; a railway line, also built after the Second World War, runs through the settlement. Komin railway station is classified as an individual cultural heritage site. The settlement’s history therefore encompasses both a change of location and different transport links. The relocation and the construction of the railway line represent markedly different periods. The railway line and the station are also distinct points of reference: the line runs through the settlement, while the heritage classification applies to the station as an individual element.

The Church and Rural Cultural Heritage

The parish church of Saint Anthony of Padua stands above the village. It was built between 1909 and 1912 and completed in 1924. The building is made of white stone from Selca on Brač. The bell tower has one storey; the sanctuary ends in a semicircular apse. An apse is the semicircular end of the sanctuary—a specific feature of the church’s form. Ruralna cjelina Komin is recognised as a rural historic ensemble. Thus, an individual church building and cultural heritage at the level of the rural ensemble are both represented here.

Agriculture and Culinary Connections

Peaches, nectarines, plums, watermelons, pomegranates, figs, grapes and apples grow in the Komin area. Fruit growing is therefore a distinct part of the area’s character. In the Neretva Valley, mandarins are considered the best-known fruit; eel is considered characteristic of the area around Komin. The geographical references differ: fruit growing and eel are associated with the area around Komin, while mandarins are associated with the Neretva Valley. Agriculture and culinary features thus offer a different perspective on the area from its settlement and architectural history.

Activities in Komin and the Surrounding Area

The Kiteboarding Club Komin-Neretva, associated with Komin, offers a kitesurfing school and equipment rental. Nearby, the themed trail Tragom bunkera leads to eight bunkers and connects local history with nature. A traditional photo safari by Neretva boat passes through narrow river channels. The two excursions differ in focus: the trail links the bunkers with history and nature, while the boat and journey through narrow river channels are at the heart of the photo safari. Activities therefore include both a kitesurfing offer associated with Komin and a trail and boat trip in the surrounding area.
