Općina Pojezerje: Geology, Cultural Landscape and Cycling
Accommodation in Općina Pojezerje
On the northern slopes of Mount Šubir lie the Kamene kugle, which were designated a protected natural feature in 2011. They are silicate-carbonate nodular concretions measuring 2 to 30 centimeters in diameter. Their laminated internal structure shows a layered formation. Their size and structure provide two specific characteristics of these geological formations.
Geology and Cultural Landscape
The Jezero Polje combines a cultural landscape classification with designated habitat types. The area is considered a particularly valuable cultural landscape zone with PR 2 status. Springs, as well as karst caves and sinkholes, are designated habitat types there. This means the landscape classification and the habitats mentioned can be considered two distinct aspects of the Jezero Polje.
Other protected cultural landscapes are associated with specific locations. The mountainous areas of Pozla Gora are listed as a particularly valuable zone with ZPP 3 status. In Dubrava, the same status applies to the terraces of abandoned vineyards. The classification is the same, but the named landscape features differ: mountainous areas here, vineyard terraces there.
Historical Landmarks
The historic Chapel of Our Lady of Jeter stands in Kobiljača and has ZPP 2 protection status. The parish church of St. Nicholas in Otrići is listed as a historic church with ZPP 3 status. These are two religious buildings in different parts of the municipality, each with its own protection status.
The immediate surroundings of the Chapel of St. Rok are under strict landscape protection. Its construction is dated to approximately the 14th century. Above Mali Prolog, Veliki Šubir is listed as a prehistoric fortification. The time periods are classified differently: the chapel has an approximate date, while Veliki Šubir is classified as prehistoric.
Cycling and Kayaking in the Jezero Polje
The Jezero Polje also extends across the Općina Pojezerje and has a network of connecting cycling routes. Visitors can use it to put together their own tours. If you are planning to cycle, this offers a way to shape your own tour rather than follow a single prescribed route.
Kayaking on the Matica is also offered in the context of the Jezero Polje. Cycling and kayaking are two distinct activities to consider when planning your time in the municipality. The natural and cultural landscape of the Jezero Polje also offers a perspective of its own: designated habitat types sit alongside its classification as a particularly valuable cultural landscape.
Local Orientation and Tradition
The Mali Prolog – Crveni Grm international border crossing is located within the Općina Pojezerje. The Ribarska večer – Rokov dan offers another local point of reference: it is a traditional part of the celebration of the Municipality Day and the feast of St. Roko in Pojezerje. Local orientation thus encompasses both a specific location and a festive custom.
