Discover Metković on the Neretva
Accommodation in Metković
When choosing a hotel in Metković, your planned travel focus can help guide you: cycling routes, the museum, cultural venues and the landscape offer different activities. The Neretva connects several of these themes, but the routes take different courses. The natural history museum, a theatre, and historic religious and ancient sites also offer specific points of interest to help with your planning.
Cycling Routes and the Neretva
The Dolina Neretve Južni krug begins in Metković, heads towards Zažablje, reaches Blace and returns to Metković along the main course of the Neretva. This means that both the starting point and the return are in the same town. The Srcem doline Neretve route reaches Metković and then continues south along a maintained riverside path. The routes therefore differ: after the section through Blace, the Južni krug returns to Metković, while Srcem doline Neretve passes through the town on its way south.
Water sports are also connected with the Neretva: a description from 2024 notes that kayakers and canoeists train in Metković and on the river. If you are interested in paddle sports, this adds a different sporting perspective on the Neretva to the cycling routes.
Museum and Cultural Venues
The permanent exhibition at the Prirodoslovni muzej Metković uses interpretive panels, habitat dioramas, preserved animals, and multimedia audiovisual displays. The first room focuses on the geological and biospeleological features of the Neretva Delta. At the end, short films and quizzes for children round off the exhibition. The permanent exhibition thus combines several presentation formats with themes relating to the delta.
The museum provides access for visitors with disabilities and for people who find stairs difficult to manage. Confirm the arrangements before your visit. Groups of more than ten people can arrange visits outside regular opening hours; confirm these arrangements in advance as well, since they may change.
Metković has a theatre with an indoor stage for 480 people and an outdoor stage for 800. The outdoor stage therefore has the greater of the two stated capacities. The parish church of St. Ilija dates from 1870; a description from 2023 notes its neo-Romanesque architecture and stone rose window.
The archaeological site of ancient Narona is located in Vid, near Metković. The Narona Museum is considered Croatia’s first in situ museum and was built over the remains of the Temple of Augustus. The temple was dedicated to Emperor Augustus and was built in 10 BC. Here, the focus is therefore on the archaeological site and the museum’s incorporation into the temple remains.
Landscape and Getting There
The protected landscape of Predolac-Šibenica has educational trails and pedestrian promenades. Visitor infrastructure was completed in 2021. Another natural feature is Pod Gredom, near Metković: this protected wetland was designated in 1974. When planning your trip, you can distinguish the trails and promenades in Predolac-Šibenica from the protected-area designation for Pod Gredom.
Metković is accessible via the A1 motorway and the Adriatic roads D8 and D9. There is a landing stage on the Neretva in the town centre. Together with the cycling routes, museum and cultural venues, these provide a range of themes to help you plan your stay in Metković.
