Lastovo: Townscape, Churches and Island Nature
Accommodation in Lastovo
Lastovo brings together a medieval townscape, distinctive churches, historic buildings and an extensive network of hiking trails. If you are planning a stay, you can get to know the town through its architecture while also exploring other aspects of the island. Its varied attractions—from old stone stairways to a fortress now used as a meteorological station—offer different starting points for planning your trip.
Townscape and Architecture
Lastovo is a medieval settlement with an amphitheater-shaped layout. Stone stairways, known as Skalinade, wind around the old town center near the church. The surrounding hills offer viewpoints overlooking the settlement and nearby fields. In this way, narrow built-up spaces and wide-open views provide two different perspectives on the town.
The houses also tell the story of the island’s architecture: family homes dating from the 15th and 16th centuries feature Sulari terraces and decorative Fumari chimneys. The Fumari are known for their distinctive shapes, with each chimney designed differently. Rather than following a single pattern, they feature a variety of designs. If you are interested in architecture, that is a good reason to pay attention to the rooflines and chimneys as you look at the houses.
Churches and Historic Buildings
The parish church of Saints Cosmas and Damian stands below Dovac at Lastovo’s historic main gathering place. In the second half of the 15th century, local craftspeople and artisans from Dubrovnik and Korčula enlarged the original church. Its location at the former central meeting place and its later expansion bring together two aspects of the town’s history: the role of the square and the development of church architecture.
Other churches offer different historical perspectives. Sv. Marija na Grži was built in 1442 and houses a wooden altarpiece from the 16th century by painters from Dubrovnik. Sv. Marija u Polju was built in the early 16th century on the foundations of a 14th-century chapel; it contains an altarpiece by Piero Francesco Bissola. Their construction dates and altarpieces show that Lastovo’s religious art is not limited to a single period.
Lastovski Poklad is also part of the cultural heritage: in 2008, the tradition was designated intangible cultural heritage of Croatia. Alongside the churches and their furnishings, living cultural traditions offer another way to explore the island’s history.
Hiking Trails and Viewpoints
Lastovo has more than 200 kilometers of marked hiking trails, maintained by rangers of the Lastovo Islands Nature Park. The network includes trails to Kaštel, the Pod Veji vrh cave and Zaklopatica, as well as a loop that connects several island chapels. When planning, you can choose between individual destinations and a route that takes in several chapels.
Kašćel stands on Glavica above Lastovo, on the site of a prehistoric hillfort. The newer fortress was built in 1808 and is used as a meteorological station. If you are considering visiting the interior, check the visiting arrangements and current status of its use in advance. This keeps its historical context separate from the question of what is possible during a visit.
Natural Surroundings and Local Wine Tradition
The Lastovo Islands Nature Park includes the island of Lastovo and a total of 44 islands, islets and reefs. On Lastovo, low light pollution makes it possible to observe the night sky and stars. This adds a view of the sky to the town’s daytime attractions.
Another local feature is Vinarija Šarić in the Gornja Luka area at the foot of Lastovo. The winery is reviving the family’s wine production. If you are planning a visit, check the visiting arrangements and availability in advance. This way, you can include the connection between the place and its wine tradition in your trip planning without assuming that a visit is always possible.
