Štedrica: Cultural Heritage in the Karst Hinterland
Accommodation in Štedrica
Štedrica brings together sacred buildings, archaeological traces and a cultivated karst landscape in the hilly hinterland. The following features of the area can help you organise these interests as you plan your trip.
Churches and Stećci
The Church of the Holy Trinity is a medieval building dating from the 14th century, with a cemetery. The Church of St John the Baptist is also part of Štedrica’s historic religious heritage. The stećci beside the Church of the Holy Trinity are designated as a Romanesque-Gothic site. This offers different perspectives for understanding the area’s history: a church building from the 14th century and a separately classified stećci site.
The fully preserved stećak Zmijski kamen is also located near Štedrica. Its relief motifs depict snakes, crosses, a shield with a sword and a hunting scene. This detail adds a nearby, visually decorated form of cultural heritage to the area’s points of interest.
Kulina and archaeological traces
The hill of Kulina rises to 320 metres above sea level and is considered a fortification and viewpoint. The preserved dry-stone wall remains on Kulina point to the existence of a settlement. Kulina is also considered a prehistoric site and a potential archaeological site. For travellers who want to take in the landscape and history together, Kulina combines its elevation with evidence of earlier settlement; its classification as a possible archaeological site remains explicitly provisional.
The tumuli in Štedrica are also classified as cultural heritage and form another historical focal point in the area. As burial mounds, the tumuli are a different form of heritage from the stećci beside the church and the dry-stone wall remains that point to a settlement.
Other buildings and landscape
The built heritage also includes the Miljević Pera house, the Komin and Konoba Vojvode Pera, the Lučić or Lucić tower house, and Gomila 2 / Vepar. The range therefore extends beyond churches to residential and other buildings.
Štedrica is part of the higher-lying, hilly hinterland along the old Napoleon Road. As one of the hinterland settlements, it forms part of a unified cultivated karst landscape with surrounding farmland and green spaces. Alongside the individual historic buildings, this rural landscape is also a focus when choosing Štedrica as a travel destination.
Getting your bearings and the regional setting
For orientation, the local road L69088 runs from Ž6228 through Štedrica to Ž6227 and is four kilometres long.
In the wider destination of Općina Dubrovačko Primorje, there is also a 50-kilometre cycling route for leisure cyclists. In Bistrina Bay in the Malostonski Channel, oysters of the Ostrea species are traditionally produced to an excellent quality. These regional features broaden the picture beyond Štedrica itself.
