Veli Golji and traditional architecture

Veli Golji is one of the settlements where individual traditional buildings and groups of buildings have been preserved. Tall, single-storey stone houses are characteristic of the rural architecture of the municipality of Općina Sveta Nedelja. They are often plastered and have stone window and door frames. Those interested in traditional building methods will find a tangible connection to the village’s character here.

A section of road runs through Veli Golji towards Marciljani. Of the L50146’s total length of 5.4 kilometres, 3.0 kilometres lie within the municipality. The road classification and route length are based on municipal planning and may change as a result of future amendments.

Routes in the Golji area and in Sveta Nedelja

The Baron Trail cycling route passes through the Golji area, connecting villages and hamlets with vineyards and traditional Istrian wine culture. Hiking and cycling routes in the Sveta Nedelja area also run through rural landscapes, vineyards and traditional freshwater ponds. They connect natural and cultural heritage with local enogastronomy. Check route conditions locally before setting off on foot or by bike.

Routes in the wider destination of Općina Sveta Nedelja

In the wider destination of Općina Sveta Nedelja, the 7.3-kilometre Šumberske Dine walking trail passes through a distinctive area with marl dunes. It connects natural phenomena, local family businesses and unspoilt nature. Here, too, it is advisable to check current trail conditions locally before setting out for a walk.

There are also three cycling routes that connect natural and cultural heritage with local food and wine offerings. Route 441, “Staza Plemića i Kalića,” is a circular route from Nedešćina via Jurazini, Eržišće, Blaškovići, Radovići, Šumber and Grašići, returning to Nedešćina. Route 442, “Tragom rudara i kamenih skulptura,” is also a circular route, this time from Nedešćina via Štrmac, Vinež, Tomažići, Cere and Santalezi. Route conditions may change; check locally before setting off.

Landscape and culture in Općina Sveta Nedelja

The municipality of Općina Sveta Nedelja lies on a high plateau above the Raša River in the hinterland of Labin and is surrounded by the Raša Gorge. At the Dubrova Sculpture Park in Štrmac, the International Sculpture Symposium has added to the collection of sculptures made from Istrian stone year after year since 1970. The Bijela cesta, the White Road in the park, is a walking trail with 16 sections, each 25 metres long. Art performances, concerts, theatre and other events take place at the Dolac Amphitheatre; the programme may vary.

The Boksitna pruga walking trail offers a different historical perspective: it follows the route of a former bauxite railway used during the mining era in Labinština. While the Bijela cesta is dedicated to sculptures, Boksitna pruga follows a former railway line. Check trail conditions before setting out for a walk here, too, as they may change.

Traditional cuisine and visits
