Križ: Church, Organ and Historic Park
Accommodation in Križ
Visitors interested in cultural history and historic architecture will find plenty to explore in Križ: the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, its organ and a park in the protected historic center.
Church and Organ in Križ
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a protected cultural monument. Records mention it as early as 1334. Its present-day Baroque appearance dates to a restoration in the 17th century; at the same time, the building is considered the best-preserved medieval structure in the area. The church thus reveals several distinct historical layers: its early mention, medieval origins and later Baroque character.
The church houses a Baroque organ dating from 1787, which was restored in 1909. It is considered one of the oldest and best-preserved organs in Croatia. The two dates mark different milestones in its history: 1787 is the year it was built, and 1909 the year it was restored. In the wider destination of Općina Križ, the church is protected as immovable cultural property under registration number Z-1895. The organ is listed there as an individual movable cultural property under Z-4174.
Historic Park and Town Center
The protected historic center of Križ includes a park dating from the late 19th century. Its design is attributed to landscape gardener Viteslav Durchanek, who is also associated with Zagreb’s Lenuci Horseshoe and Botanical Garden. Both the park’s date of origin and the attribution of its design are relevant to understanding it. The church and park represent different aspects of the townscape: the long architectural history of a religious monument on the one hand, and a green space from a later era on the other.
More Cultural Sites in the Wider Destination of Općina Križ
Beyond the town of Križ, the wider destination of Općina Križ offers other cultural and historical sites elsewhere in the municipality. In Okešinec, Sipćina is a protected archaeological site with the remains of a Roman villa rustica. Excavations uncovered parts of two structures. Both are enclosed by an apse and retain remains of underfloor heating. Archaeological research suggests the site was used from the final decades of the 1st century BC to the 3rd or 4th century AD. More recent radiocarbon dates also indicate use in the 6th and 7th centuries.
Another cultural connection leads to Vezišće, where the world-renowned opera prima donna Milka Trnina was born on December 19, 1863. Her memorial room is located in the Milka Trnina Cultural Center in Vezišće. The Lipanjski susreti Milke Trnine festival of folk and musical creativity is held there every year. The program includes choirs, cultural associations, children and young people, as well as traditional costumes, dances and customs. The Badalić Days are held annually in early June.
Events and Getting There
The annual Križ Municipality Days program takes place on the last weekend of August and includes a bike tour, a market for crafts and handicrafts, and a wine tasting; the exact program may vary from year to year.
