Culture and wine on Martin Breg in Dugo Selo
In the northern part of Dugo Selo lies Martin Breg, which rises to 204 metres. It is considered a popular walking route and excursion destination; vineyards and wine cellars characterize the hill. A municipal vineyard lies opposite the Church of St. Martin. Martin Breg thus brings together walking and excursion destinations with a landscape shaped by viticulture.
The Church of St. Martin dates from the 13th century and is considered the area’s oldest and most significant cultural and historical monument. Its grounds are an archaeological site. Archaeological discoveries leave open the possibility that the church was built on the foundations of an older Templar church. The footprint of St. Martin is affixed to the wall of the old church. Martin Breg also features a large wooden sculpture of the saint, with motifs depicting work in the vineyard; the town’s historical name is carved into its base.
Traditional wine events on Martin Breg include Vincekovo, Martinje and the grape harvest. The event programme may vary from year to year.
